He was one of the best bassists in metal, and also the heart of Metallica. This is evidenced since "...And Justice For All" was the last disc to contain some of his riffs he created (also, not many know but some of the riffs on that album was left-overs from when Mustaine was in Metallica). "Master of Puppets" shall forever be the greatest Metallica album!
