This thing here: Is a Confederate cavalry uniform button that ebay removed from my list because: "The auction-style listing was removed because it violated the eBay Artifacts policy. All fees related to this listing have been credited to your account. We also notified members who placed bids on the item that the listing has been canceled." "Listings of artifacts, grave-related items, and Native American crafts that are protected under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act are not permitted on eBay. Listings of cave formations that are protected by the Federal Cave Resources Protection Act of 1988 are also not permitted" ********************************* Of course that there are always thousands of CW buttons and all kinds of dug stuff on ebay all the time, has me in an email marathon with ebay. Not that I have any intention of relisting the thing. There is an offer of $5,000 for it. Now I know it's English...most decent Confederates were made in places like Manchester, but $5,000. Unreal. Something odd about this one that I'm missing. Its back is blank, hollow with a copper shank. I think it's peweter. If it wasn't so clean and well-made, it might be made in New Orleans or somesuch but I seriously doubt it. Normally they can run more than $500 but this...... I'm supposed to believe that their ending this auction is a coincidence? Nothing smells worse than this. Sorry.... I wanted you to read the reason for withdrawl. I got carried away Damn. Wish it were mine. I'm selling it for a friend in Massachusettes. Charlie Arrrrrrrgh

Oh yeah. Ebay can knock off stuff. Some of it gets pretty effen stupid. Some ok. Can't sell swastikas there because someone in France sued the crap out of them, I think. Can't sell cigarettes, booze, handguns....where that gets ridiculous is when you list capguns, you have to have cork in the end of the barrel, preferable orange....I kid you not. Can't sell things like fire or police badges without proof that they are obsolete. More stuff too, but body parts have made it through a few times. Morons. Charlie

Not sure why they would consider it an artifact, associated with archeological, but $5000.00 is high and $500.00 is more the range from this website, which calls them relics: http://www.relicman.com/butczzc.htm I noticed a sort of disclaimer: Dug or "battlefield" relics have been recovered from private property with owners permission. He makes a point of saying "nondug" on all but one button. These have linings in the back, with the "C" in front, all made in England, as opposed to what you are describing: Quote:Its back is blank, hollow with a copper shank. I think it's peweter. |

Hey Charlie- Try noodleing Civil War forums. You might get someone to explain why THAT button would bring a 5K offer. I don't understand why ebay would object to you selling a button off a coat you wore when you were a teenager It does suck that they took the item down. -P.

Had a felt toy cConfederate cap from Gettysburg when I was a kid. Kids always want stars and bars.... Anyway by ebay's reasoning, my artillery, CSN naval, standard eagle and of course the dug breast plate...nearly all of them seem to be by now...should be removed and some of them are definitley battlefield relics. As I said, there are thousands of these things on ebay and hundreds as I write this. Something is very fishy and I was just offered $4,000 for it too. This is something different. The thing is that you can buy all the books you like but you won't find anything direct about it. I'm wondering if it might be western related as well...I'll let you know what happens. It's fun, really. Charlie

oooo, what a cool mystery Charlie! I think you should charge a listing fee though... say, 20% of the purchase price?

Sorry, Charlie, that really does suck.............. on a happy note: I was just the successful bidder on a 7' inflatable Corvette with Santa and reindeer inside............kinda like the giant snowglobe everyone has in their yard....... this will pretty much round out Gil's collection-AND decorate our yard for the holidays! Charlie-without provenance, this button would not have as much value, I know..... but does it HAVE to be labeled "dug" or "non-dug"? Happy bidding Cathi

Here is the back Now: Here is the latest: I was partially right. It IS southern made and just pre-war. The ones that are more common are from England and usually say so on the back on another piece. One collector says that it's very rare. Fine. I hope Holly sells the thing. I hate being in the middle unless she wants to give me a little for all this. It's supposedly worth up to $7,000. Why is all the good stuff hers? It's being one piece cast (Looks two pieces to me) is the key to it, I guess. I used to deal with all kinds of WWII militaria and I forget just how volatile the market can be. That Burns CW PBS series has a lot to do with it. Thanks for the input kids.....Oh Mel: She gives me about 15% or a bit more depending. Charlie
