I just finished a 3 week course of prednisone (60mg for 1 week, then 2 week taper). It stopped my cluster now that I've stopped taking prednisone the CHs have returned. Unfortunately, because of SARS, both my GP and my neuro arent working (I live in Toronto, Canada) so I don't know if I can immediately start a 2nd course of prednisone. I researched the archives but if anyone has an opinion I'd appreciate it.

Hi Alann, I have done the dosepak many times in the past. It usually works the first go round but tends to lose effectiveness after that. I have never found a preventive yet that works so I must rely upon abortives for now. Please remember this is just me. Good Luck. PFDAN's Mark

I just went through the same thing. I just had the two week taper whidh did not knock them out, but did cut them back. I was 5-6 a day went to 2-3 a day. I went to a Neuro and he prescribed me another steriod in a pack form. I'm not sure of the name because I got the generic. I do think I read somewhere that you should not take large doses of Pred more then twice a year, but I also think that COPD patients take it almost non-stop so I guess I'm no help. K

thanks for your input guys, re: "dosepaks" so you start up a 2nd course right after the first or does your system need a "break"? alan

I had a break of 10 days, but I don't know if I needed it. It just took me two weeks to get another doctors appointment. Kris

Alann, I just finished my latest cycle, and used a combo of Prednisone and Verapamil to get through it. There was a good discussion on this combo, here's the link to it, especially see Svenn's advice ... I would suggest you need to take the Prednisone a little longer and try a high dose of Verapamil with it. If the link doesn't work, search the forum for: Prednisolone Verapamil Combo http://www.clusterheadaches.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=meds;action= display;num=1044444366
