Imitrex Tip Question

I have been reading the instructions for the Imitrex tip over and over for a few years now, but never had the guts to try it. Lately I've been so desperate for trex, I think I need to get over being squeamish and just do it. But I have a question, about the key step: "5) I manually put the needle in my arm and use a Q-tip to manually push approx. one-third (2mg) of solution into my system (2mg - 3mg depending on the severity of the CH)" This is NOT done in the vein, right? I usually do mine in the hip, because I am too thin to find a place in my arm that doesn't hit muscle or other painful stuff. Can anyone give me some advice on positioning, how to make this go smoothly? Also, I get extremely shakey when I get hit, I'm afraid of messing it up... or wasting it... Thanks- Robin

NO!! It's a sub-cutaneous injection....you can literally inject right under the skin...it does not have to go in deep. and avoid the muscle

Even if you are thin there usually is plenty of Subcutaneous tissue (fatty tissue) in your abdomen (lower portion and the lateral/love handles) if wanting to ensure you miss the muscle pinch up the SQ tissue and inject the tissue between your fingers or what ever means you can use to bunch up the SQ tissue on your abdomen. There is the back of your arms/ inner thighs. Remember pinch up skin. On top it all the needle is short so it will be hard to his muscle unless you go into Biceps, Quadracepts, calfs, upper Abd. (areas where the muscle is right against the surface of the thin layers of skin. Oh one more thing if really thin you could also angle the needle at 45 degrees this will prevent muscle as well. We do that with insulin syringes that are also only SQ injections. Good luck....Kim

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

| Yup, that's exactly what happened. I counted up my stash, figured the days till I could get refilled, and when I got hit I got over it. Now I'll never go back! Can't believe how much Trex I wasted all these years! I've never had a cycle last this long without finding a med that worked, so from this point I'm waiting this cycle out... if it ever actually ends. Can't take any more pills than I already am. Thanks to all of you for your info and for checking up on me! PF days to us all- Robin

Hi Robin, I am an oldtimer- returning to the site- Here is another tip on imitrex. Ask your neuro. or doc. you get the imitrex from to prescribe it in the vials it comes in rather than the stat dose refills. This way, you can take the insulin needles and load your own dose. It is much easier this way than to have to use a q-tip to inject 2mgs. I have been doing this for some time and in fact can use smaller amounts of imitres when the headaches are not as bad. Sometimes a vial of imitrex can get me 4 shots. The pack comes in 5 vials and if you have insurance, it is much cheaper than the 2 pack refill. I usually inject right in my thigh- pick up an inch of skin and inject with a small insulin needle- the needle is very short so it cannot go in very far. hope that helps! Best of luck- hang in there! ~Chris

Ditto to Chris. Multidose vials and insulin syringes! Way easier than the tip, and a clean, sterile needle each and every time. Sorry, but being in public health for a long time, made me squeemish about re-using the same needle - even if it was only for me! Kris.
