Title: Automotive GPS Advice (non CH)
Post by ClusterChuck on Dec 31st, 2004, 11:25pm
Ok, family, I need some advice.  Over Christmas I used my nephew's GMC Yukon Denali, with built in GPS.  I drove it from here (NC) to Massachusetts and back.  While in Massachusetts, I went up to New Hampshire.  I used the GPS every where I went.  It was the most amazing device.  I am VERY impressed.  So much so that I have decided to buy one to put in my vehicle.  I need one, as I am on the road all over this state, and am constantly trying to find out how to get from one point to the next.

My question is, which do I buy?  What do I look for?  I am guessing that I should end up paying around $600.00 to $700.00.

I want it to have the most detailed maps as possible.  I want readily upgradeable maps.  I want the largest screen possible.  I want voice commands.  I would like choice or routes: fastest; shortest; alternate.  I am not sure if I want a touch screen or not.

What advise can any of you give?  There must be some in the family that know these things.

Thanks
Chuck

Hi,

First: Happy New year mate.
About the GPS, you can go two ways; you can buy a car-GPS which installs into your car and remains there or you can buy a portable one.
I prefer the portable ones, you can have them in a PDA or a stand alone version. I've seen one here with touch screen that works realy great. Just install a bracket in the car and you can take it with you, wherever you go. (tom tom navigator. ( i dont know what's available in US)

How are you going to find your way to the store to get one?

I have one of these duct taped to the dash of the Jeep.

$600-700 Bucks???????     Dayumm man.   Find a woman, and give her the atlas.  She will talk to ya, and get ya where ya wanna be.  She probally wont break apart when ya hit a bump, freeze, or become overheated.  Hell, for 600 bucks, ya could find 3 women.  Would be a good thing if they all get along well.

Never thought much about using one in a car. I have had good luck with the Trimble Corp. GPS nav stuff for the boat.
They have some handheld units that might be of interest.

The laptop solution might be better for you though.
YMMV

Here you go Chuck. This one I got from a guy named Ralph who told me he used it in his 1931 Packard. The old ones are better built too:

This is the link to the manufacturer of the model of GPS we use.

http://www.garmin.com/

The in-car models are great, but if you are interested in a sport that uses GPS to treasure hunt, a handheld model is needed.

Check out the sites and figure out how much your going to use it and for what. You can probably get a model that will mount on your dash and be portable...

Plus, if you go for a walk/hike and get hopelessly lost, you can backtrack out of there and not look like a total idiot  [smiley=confused2.gif]

In my Jeep, I use the Garmin eMap. I have it on a RAM mount, and it plugs into a 12V adapter. When I'm not in the Jeep, I slip it into my coat pocket and take it with me. (I don't ever leave high-dollar items in my Jeep)

If you want the big one with voice commands, color screen, and all the gizmos, adjust your budget to around $1,000-$1,500, depending on the model and installation.
