We're here... you ARE already talking to us... :)

But hey, I used to get panic attacks before going to a bus if it was too crowded... I got over that feeling, though.

If it helps, I've been in stores with people who push me with their carts all the time... Some say sorry and push me again in a minute... *sigh*

grocery shopping, especially when it's busy, can be pretty unpleasant...unless you are strolling through a sunny, open-air market at your leisure.  Our big discount markets have about as much asthetic appeal as McDonalds.Even the parking lots suck.  So allow yourself more than enough time to get the job done, and at least you won't be panicked for lack of time.  If you are actually experiencing a panic attack, maybe you are suppressing some old really bad experience from a grocery shopping trip. Sounds like going shopping is outside your comfort zone and you just want to get back home.. Just try to build your tolerance for being out slowly. Go shopping at quieter times when when possible, go on the spur of the moment so youre not building it up in your head, treat yourself to something while you are out.. just a magazine or something silly (this is NOT a licence to spend!!  ;) ) Make it enjoyable and it will become so. I know what it feels like to be panicky and to want to get back to where I feel safe so you have my sympathy (HUG)

I can understand how you feel. Everytime I go to the grocery store, I get a sense of anxiety. So I try to go when I KNOW its not going to be too busy. Real early in the morning, or late in the evening so I can take my time and not run into people that stop every 2 feet to look at EVERYTHING and block the aisles. Take your time. We are in such a rush rush society and I think thats what brings on a lot of the stress.  [smiley=hug.gif]

You're welcome... :)
That sounds like a good idea to me... ;;D

BTW, I'm one of those weird people who actually LIKE grocery shopping & grocery stores in general. I've known to visit few of them just for fun... But hey, I've got it in my blood. I have lots of relatives in coop business... ;;D

Sorry about this.

I'm 58 years old and the older I get, the sillier things appear. Grocery stores are no exception. Find stuff that makes you laugh. The crap they try to fend off on us is a study in lunacy. Just reading the "nutritional values" on bottled water should do it. Watching guys on cell phones getting advice buying a head of lettuce and reading at checkout in the National Enquirerer about Prince Charlie and Prisilla, or that Hitler's children run a sex video shop in Luxemborg, etc. etc.

Give it a shot. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/blob.jpg

Hmmm... I once bought a bottle of water because it contained magnesium... ::)

I've got anxiety/panic disoder, and grocery stores and malls are not my favorite places.  Browse the web boards on this topic, and you will see that lots of people find stores are a trigger.

Not saying you have this or anything, but here's a link with some info to read:

http://www.adaa.org/AnxietyDisorderInfor/PanicDisAgor.cfm

If you did happen to have that, a combination of therapy and/or meds may be very helpful, although each person and situation varies!

Yes. I've struggled with this kind of stuff for years. My anxiety and panic disorder took over my life for awhile and caused me to have many phobias. One by one, I am tackling them. Grocery stores used to be hell for me (malls still are) until I followed the above advice. Go in the morning or at night when it's not crowded. Keep a list in the car, so you can just drop by without getting worked up about it. Breathe. Think serene thoughts. Personally, I'm planning a few early morning trips to the mall with the kids this summer, just to desensitize myself. It's a process. It doesn't happen overnight. Hang in there and keep eating (drinking?) those seeds. Hugs, nani

Nani's post reminded me of one event, so called "Hullut Päivät" (Crazy Days), which is a special sale at one of Finland's biggest department stores. There are crazy people at all times, pushing, yelling..etc. Two minutes in there is enough to give panic attack to anyone. I've avoided them for several years now. This sale takes place twice a year and if someone wants to go, the advice is presicely the same; early mornings or late nights.

A friend of mine started suffering from panic attacks on a family holiday seven years ago. It became so severe that she couldn't go to school at one point. During these years she has been better and worse. She has managed to give up the daily medication only lately, within a month.

I'm a phobia queen but I hide it well.......I worry about everything.......you could tell me your problems and I would worry about them for you. I get the panic feeling when I go get groceries too so here is what I do cuz I am my own phyciatrist. I plan to go to a cool store I like to go to and maybe find a few COOL shirts on sale or try on some jeans and get a new pair or I go to one of the big new pet stores. That way I sort of bypass the anxiety dread trip......I make myself LOOK FORWARD to going. Course it is best to get the grocery shopping part over with first....take a small cooler to stick milk or butter ect in.....then it your favorite store FOR YOURSELF. Myself I just love Penny's jr department or Elderbeerman's to look at cool ass stuff and just sorta brouse around and I also go do all this before 3:00 pm when everyone else has the same idea so it is rather QUIET. Yeah there are some good meds if you have panic disorders that are ruleing your life.......but when I gained all that weight on them I didn't want to go anywhere and it sort of backfired on me. Just be aware of how you feel. Do things you LIKE OR LOVE to do when doin the dredgery things. I am noted for snarling at people in the grocery store......kids thowin stuff and screaming haveing temper tamtrums and getting away with it and people on cell phones talking loud 'really makes my day'......but have found out goin earlier in the day weeds some of em out. Course you could be like me and jonny with the long hair and all the tats and jus SCARE people away......that works for me ALOT and I love it. Jerk eliminator Pam

I wanna go shopping with jonny
