Title: ??? on Laptop Computer
Post by midwestbeth on Dec 7th, 2007, 2:36pm
I'm buying son Chris a laptop computer for Christmas.  He is in college and needs a computer that is capable of running auto-cad programs.  I know the programs he will be running are too much for the average computer to handle.

My questions:

What should I be looking for and how much should I expect this computer to set me back?

Any info from the puter experts out there is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Beth

2d autocad dose not take that much

core 2 duo (centrino duo) 2.66 -3ghz
2gb ddr2 (fastest possible)
200gb sata drive higher or lower is acceptable
nvidia geforce 7 or 8 series card
vista business or ultimate and autocad 2008

for 3d
same cpu 3 ghz
maybe go sli
or a single geforce 8 series card

2.5 gb ddr 2
200gb sata drive
vista ultimate and autocad 2008

My point exactly. It may as well be in German, Greek, or Swahili. When somebody tries to help a person out, it helps if they speak in a language the person understands. ::)

In English:

The laptop you get should have
A Centrino Duo Core (core 2) CPU (this means have 2 cpu's) that are rated between 2.6 and 3.0 gigahertz.

The laptop should have at least 2 gigabytes of DDR2 memory, or RAM. In the better laptops, this is pretty standard. The memory needs to be fast.

The laptop should have a 200 gigabyte hard drive, although something around 160 to 180 gigs is fine. The closer to 200 the better. You will pay for this. $

It should have a very good video (graphics) card. NVidia GE Force is one of the best, and the card specs should begin with 7 or 8 (such as NVIDIA GE Force 7600)

I would forget Vista, and go with Microsoft XP Pro for the operating system. It doesn't have all the crap on it that he won't use, unlike Vista. XP Pro is a pretty pared down operating system, and he can download anything he wants to add.

You can go to http://www.dell.com. Dell has good laptops, and you can tell them what you want, and they will make it for you. Same thing with Lenovo. IBM sold their laptop business to them, and they are good. http://www.lenovo.com/us/en/

Lenovo will make one to your specs too.

Expect to pay up to around $3500 USD. It may not be that much, but could be. The bigger hard drive, and more memory will cost you.

you may also want to look at locks laptop cases and laptop cooling pads

tigerdirect has a great laptop cooler made by PPA International its clear acrylic light and has replaceable led fans

and I say Windows Vista Because of the BITLOCKER hard drive encryption making the computer useless if stolen untill they buy a new hard drive......

Vista is not a good fit for CAD/CAM. MS Win XP Pro is a better choice. YMMV
