Title: I want to go back to the good old days
Post by jimmers on Dec 12th, 2007, 9:02pm
Why is everyone in such a hurry? People are rude, always in a rush and don't give a damn about anyone around them. When I retire, I'm going to find me a town with about 50 people in it.

Sometimes I think that all of these little devices that we have invented to make our lives easier, have only allowed us to fill up our free time with more bullshit and we (I) am busier than ever! WTH?

Has technology really made us better people with more free time for ourselves or Family? I say NO!!

What says you?

Jimmers :-/

Working for FedEx for 20 years has caused me to lose track of my Christmas spirit from time to time. Whenever I rediscover it, it's been because I made a conscious decision to do so.

Technology doesn't make us anything. WE make ourselves better people.

What we do with our time is up to us. We all choose, some more wisely than others.

Impersonal too.

Wouldn't it be nice to hear a real person now and then when you ask for help? It's a matter of greed. You have to pay humans to answer the phone.

Everything is procedure now and any variation from stringent guidelines is considered a crime. I'm tired of being treated by pharmacists like I'm a drug peddler. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/red fist pound.gif

We have Jimi blazing the trail ahead into the backwoods of age for us and I'm going to have to handle this soon myself.

If a chipmunk comes near my hammock, I'll make you proud of me, Jimi.  ;)

I think it started with the guy who invented agriculture.

"See, if we plant these seeds, we can pile up all this food, and we won't have to work hard looking for stuff to eat later on."

We never should have listened to him--his descendants have been selling the virtues of labor-saving schemes and devices ever since.

Best,

George

Oh, I don't know - I found a place in the country where things haven't changed much in the last 100 years or so. Neighbors still help neighbors and everyone still knows what goes on with everyone.

Heck, I got sick and lo and behold, I got a get-well card from the Postmistress and then a phone call from her to see if I needed anything. But then again - this is country....

We've all got modern conviences and computers, but we still grow gardens and make "homemade stuff" and share with each other. We still have "covered dish" dinners at the old schoolhouse (100 years old) down the road and take food to shut-in's. We check on each other and let one another know if we're gonna be out of town and for how long, so someone will keep an "eye" on our place or feed the animals while we're gone.

I love the "small" community life - it's slow and easy - everyone knows everyone. You go to the grocery store and the checker calls you by name. You need help finding something and someone takes you TO where it is. It's PERSONAL - not like the BIG cities.

Wish I'd moved here years ago -- but don't think I was ready for it then.........

People are rude, no getting around that, but I think it would have much more to do with their upbringing than anything else.  Remember, most of our parents would not have tolerated what comes out of some peoples' mouths today.

Reminds me of an encounter I had with a cashier at Wal Mart a couple of years ago.  Sarah and I were checking out and the cashier never once made eye contact, didn't speak, didn't do jackschitt.  Finally Sarah had enough of the rudeness and told her, "It wouldn't hurt you to smile".  Her response, "I don't get paid to smile."  Needless to say that the mgr. on duty pulled the girl off the register immediately.

Another instance.  I was in Brookshires and when I checked out, again, the cashier never said a word, never made eye contact (and Brookshires has a very strict policy on how their people treat customers).  I went up to the service desk and asked to speak to a manager, then announced loudly enough for most people in the front of the store to hear, "If I wanted this type of damned service, I would have gone to Wal Mart".

I'm no longer amazed at how rude people are.

ummm... so... you got two people fired because they didn't smile? Well I hope they weren't having a particularly bad day or a case of bells palsy  ;;D

My partner Ben tells me on a regular basis how sick he is of the rude way that people treat him. He is a butcher and the store he works for demands the employees to be always pleasant and polite. There are times especially during the holidays when stress levels rise.... I guess it's a two way street....

Have you hugged your Wal-mart employee today? With what those people make and for what they have to put up with... especially during the holiday... I think they might need a hug.

with warm regards,
Tony

It's not technology, it's the punishing tax burden that we are carrying.  People have to work too hard and too long just to get by nowadays, so they don't have time to waste worrying about you or anybody else, it's rush, rush, rush, trying to get it all done and hopefully having time to make dinner and go to bed when they get home, just to do it all over again tomorrow.

I think people move around too much.  Few people in the cities or burbs know their neighbors.  Without roots and stability, there is no community.

My dad owns a house built for WWII vets returning home. It was a pre-fab kit house made from that fancy new metal, aluminum. It is 800 square feet.  By modern standards, that is a rabbit hutch - people want 2000, 2500 feet or more. They are busy trying to pay for the house they have, or the next house they are trying to buy, and the fancy car that goes with it.

On the other hand:

We've all but eliminated "true poverty" in our country, the poorest people in our country are the heaviest!

Our infant mortality rate is infitismally small copmpared to even 50 years ago.

We have eliminated many diseases that used to decimate populations as recently as 75 years ago. Found cures for conditions that used to be immediate death sentences.

Our quality of life is incredible compared to 50 years ago.

On the social side women were all but indentured slaves a hundred years ago and couldn't even vote. Our labor forces are protected by laws unheard of in the 30's and 40's.

I think we often times view the past through rose colored glasses. I'd like to live in Mayberry too but I wouldn't give up indoor plumbing, my 'climate controlled" car, or my DOUBLED  life expectancy to get it.

On the other hand, if those damned kids don't pull their **&^^ pants up so I don't have to see their boxers I'll staple the damned thngs to their hips with a nail gun!!!!

It's all about attitude. I avoid places where people are crowded together, stressed out and in a hurry. 'Cause all being around that does is make me rude.

I've worked retail, grocery, and food service, so I understand what these rude people are dealing with. Sometimes, all it takes is a smile and an "I know what you're going through" to get them to smile. There is nothing like empathy to make someone's day.

Jimmers, you are right about technology... what was invented to make our lives easier, often makes it harder.
I often keep my cell off, just because I like the good old days way of being "unreachable".

Being angry about it just adds to the anger and inpatience of the world.

LMAO... I know what you mean. However... I'd rather see their boxers due to baggy pants, than see their muffin tops and tattoos due to tight, low rise jeans.

I work in a Big Retail Store.

This time of year people are rude every hour of the day.

I always say to myself Don't take it personal.

That is hard to do when customers are rude and yelling. Plus the Christmas music that repeats every two hours. I work 10 hour days listening to the same music.

Home is my haven when I am not working I do not want to shop. Christmas is a wonderful time of year but it has turned very commercial and I see that end of it.

When I get home on Christmas eve I tell Barry no more Christmas music. When I arrive at work on Boxing day that will be the first thing I change is the music.

Love Christmas day with the family..

I went to Walmart late last night (until Hubby got out of work) maybe around 9 pm. The people in front of me were checking out , I saw the cashier with her eyes closed and bending over the cash register, the people did not even looked at her...when it came my time to pay she still looked distress and I asked her if she was feeling ok and she answer : "no, I feel terrible, I feel like I am going to pass out at any time".
I asked her if she could go home and she said she needed to stay another 2 hours before she could leave home and I told her if I give her the money for those 2 hours she could go home at the same moment and she smiled at me and told me: "thanks but I have to stay if no they will fire me, we are shorthanded and they need everyone now".

I left feeling really bad for her but also because managers nowdays don't care about their workers health issues, they only see them as working machines  :(.

Talk about holiday spirit...

I think the ribbon on top of the service the clerk provided is the increased possibility that she was able to share the "Bug" that bit her with everyone she came in contact with.

Whenever any of my staff is feeling ill, even if they want to stay, I send them home.  I cannot afford for them to share a sickness with the rest of the staff or the other 200 people on this floor.

"Opie Buys a Christmas Present"

Aunt Bea  "Oh, that little girl came by for you, my her dirty feet.  Now Opie, didn't we tell you not to play with that girl by the pond?"

Opie  "Aw Aunt Bea, she only brought the horse pile to the pond so we could swat flies for the tadpoles."

Andy  "Opie, listen to your Aunt Bea now.  She found a minnow in your back pocket you sat on at the dinner table yesterday?"

Opie  "She brought minnows from the pond to the class fish bowl, two were floating yesterday so we brought the rest back to the pond.  We buried one by her house and I forget when I washed up for dinner to bury mine."

Aunt Bea  "Tell her you have chores and homework to do.  I would think she'd wash those dirty feet in the pond."

Opie  "She caught a tadpole with her toes once."

Andy  "Barney thinks she stands on the curb at the crossing corner when he's not looking.  He's warned her twice about "made ja look! made ja look!".

(pause)

Opie  "Paw, her Mom's hardly home, working all the time.  She ain't got no Paw.  Is it ok to hold a girl's hand a little if you know it's going to get dark soon?"

Andy  "Opie, son, have you thought about Christmas?"

Jimi's right -- It's all in your attitude.

Those of you who know me, know I don't drink much (not a teetotaler - I just don't drink much), but I have a client who owns several liquor stores, so at Christmas I go shopping for my other clients who drink. Well yesterday was shopping day. I shopped for about two hours and examined all the "gift" stuff they put out at Christmas. While I was doing this customers came in the store and I was so enthusied that I just had to show them all the "neat" stuff. One thing led to another and "we" sold a BUNCH of gift boxes (one lady came in for a pack of cigarettes and bought over $200 of stuff before she left) while I was shopping and everyone was laughing and having a great time. My client ended up giving me a discount on my stuff and asked if I could come back tomorrow and shop some more.

When is the last time you had a great time in a liquor store? A good attitude is contagious.

I absolutely detest shopping at Christmas, even to the grocery store.  It's jammed with shoppers, the aisles are so packed with "stuff" for me to spend money on that you can't even walk by alone, let alone push a cart around.  I much prefer today's "technology" by purchasing much of my gifts online.  Alas, I've dropped the ball this year, so it's to the stores I must go.

I see the long, long lines at the checkouts, in every store,  and most people are patiently waiting their turn with their load of goodies.  Yes, there are those who jump from line to line, trying to find the shortest line because they are in such a hurry.  They are rude, think nothing for others, and think that their time is more valuable than anyone else's. So what!

I watch the cashiers, who have been there on their feet hour after hour.  They are tired.  Yes, some are not friendly to the next yahoo in line, don't smile, say not a word, but, some greet every customer with a smile and a "did you find everything you were looking for".

Know what?  If I happen to be in the line of a tired, glum, unfriendly cashier, when it's my turn to unload my load on to the belt, I smile at the cashier and make a comment about how busy he/she is, and how tired he/she must be.   I get a smile back, almost every time.   And, after my purchases have been rung up, payment made, stuff bagged, I again smile and say "Thank you".  Nine out of ten times, I will get a smile and a "thank you" right back.

You get only as much as you give.

Sandy

I typically smile and talk to my cashiers and usually get a good response back.   Hell this weekend I shocked the hell out of the girl in Electronics cause I wanted her to tell me when a certain movie was coming out for sale. Her phone started ringing and she looked at it and started to still help me.  I told her that I was not in a rush and if she wanted to get the phone she could.  Her phone call lasted 1 min and then she got me the info I needed plus telling me how much it would be.  Hell I think she would have done a hand stand if I asked her to.

I'm having a good time with cashiers now. All you need is some gray hair, sag a bit at the seams, act a little more confused than I really am...(us old farts can get away with this) and tell them how amazed I am at all the new checkout technology. It always helps when I screw up the credit card machine too. Then it's off for 53 cent senior coffee at McDonalds.

Ya know, even if you're tired of shopping, even if your feet hurt and the lines are long and you're irritated, you can still smile and be nice. I always talk to the people in front of me or behind me in line (makes the wait go faster).

My mama taught me that there's no EXUSE for being nasty (well maybe she didn't teach me REAL well, but....). For the most part, things you can't do anything about, you should just make the best of and have fun at it.

Right now is the season to be jolly, merry and bright and I'll be damned if I'll let a sour puss spoil that for me. It's a choice and I refuse to let anyone upset me because they're irritable. I just smile brightly and tell them I hope their parents get married before the first of the year! ;;D

When I was a kid I use to ride my motorcycle across the Lake and ride through little towns...Covington, Mandeville and Madisonville. It was hard not to noticed that the pace was much slower, the people kinder and they maintained a level of Grace little practiced these days. I swore that one day I would live across the Lake.

Now, I live in Mandeville and work in Covington but it's not the same. The not a very nice persons have followed me here.

Hold on to your Manners. They are rare things these days and may actually be worth something someday.

Yup, there is a lot of frustration out there this time of year.  Traffic is insane, malls are packed, there are 9 shopping days until Christmas, travel plans have to be confirmed, etc, etc.

For many, many years I let myself fall into the insanity of all of this only to be so stinkin' tired by the time Christmas rolled around that all I wanted to do was fast forward to January.

All of this changed the year that my Dad suffered a brainstem infarction and our family spent most of the holiday season staying with him in the hospital.

Running from store to store to find those "perfect gifts" didn't matter.  The dozens of cookies that we usually bake didn't enter our minds.  All of the insanity of the holidays came to a screeching stop.

The best present we had for Christmas that year and for the years since then was seeing my Dad able to walk thru the front door of his house on Christmas morning when the doctors gave him a 10% chance of making it thru the surgery.

We told the docs that Dad is so ornery that heaven won't take him and the Devil wouldn't know how to handle him so he has to stay with us. ;;D

A few years after Dad's stroke, I started volunteering at the Toys For Tots bike run at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).

The volunteers arrive early in the morning, spend most of the day on their feet running huge bins of donated toys to and from the hospital lobby to the back rooms to be sorted, trying to keep hundreds of people who are donating the toys in some kind of order, standing outside directing parking for hundreds of bikes, walking, carrying or pushing kids in wheelchairs who are patients in the hospital to the lobby to see Santa....it's holiday insanity at its best!!!!

As I looked around the lobby of the hospital, I saw lines and lines of people holding toys, laughing, talking, hugging and patiently waiting their turn to donate their toys, books, etc.  No harsh words, no grumbling, no arguing.  Just smiles and yes, some tears as they made their way over to talk to the kids who thanked them for their donations.

Most of these kids were discharged from the hospital and were able to enjoy the holidays at home with their families but there are some who have spent their entire lives at the hospital from the day they were born and transferred to CHOP.

Sorry if this post is getting mushy or touchy/feely but when the stress and frustration of the holiday season starts ramping up around me, taking a few minutes to reflect on the above situations and to think about how fortunate I am to have the friends and family who are still with me and also those who are no longer with me but have been a part of my life puts everything into perspective.
