Title: Re: My drive home Post by Guiseppi on Dec 13th, 2007, 4:46pm If you're looking for a plus to this weather, My brother was born and raised and lives here in So Cal. If you break down here you will sit on the side of the road until you call triple A for a tow, or the cops to help you. 2 years ago he was visiting his in laws in Minnesota in one of these "ice storms". Being of So Cal blood he naturally spun out into a snow bank half burying his car. In the span of 10 minutes 4 cars drove by. ALL STOPPED. They produced jackets for his wife and kids, ropes and shovels and had him out in short order. When he commented on the generosity they replied, "if you get left out in this you die!" I do like your spirit back there. Guiseppi |

Title: Re: My drive home Post by Jonny on Dec 13th, 2007, 5:11pm The smart move would be to get off at the Neponset river and go through Quincy, They are only rolling at 3 MPH on the expressway.....they are rolling at 30 MPH on the back roads. At least you would be moving instead of sitting there.....Oh and by the way, folks are starting to abandon their cars on the SE expressway, that should slow it down to 1 MPH...LOL ;;D |

Stuck in traffic behind your dumb ass that didn't leave work before the storm! ::) This happens anytime we get snow at a rate above an inch an hour. Everyone leaves work at the first snow flake which jams the roads which prevents the plows and salters from clearing the roads. Snow piles up, the cars warm it to a nice slush which freezes between the lanes creating the perfect surface for lane changes that turn into spin outs. It's so much fun. :-/ Even though I left plenty early enough, I've been sitting home counting heads as my kids get home from work and call to tell me they're safe. The last to check in, my daughter Meg, didn't leave work till 2:30pm. That's when her idiot boss said she could leave. She just got home now. Still have two sons that haven't checked in but they both have 4WD. Evan does shipping and receiving and can't leave till the 5:30pm UPS pickup. I'm still not sure where Roary is yet. His cell phone is broken but he's driving an F-150. Time to fire up the snow blower ;;D -Dennis- |

Yup - that's the way we do things here! We never leave without hat, mittens, sturdy shoes, a couple of bags of sand and usually a blanket. I never worry about MY skills as a driver (been driving in this crap for 30 years), but I don't know what I'll have to react to so I go prepared. It's kinda funny to watch Jrbrew try to weedle his way out of being prepared. He comes out to the car in a hooded sweatshirt and crummy shoes and wonders why the car doesn't move 'til he's properly prepared. (sigh) Be safe out there friends. |

Thats what I did. You called it exactly. I jumped on 93-S down by Southbay and didn't see one single plow or sander out there all the way to Neponset . It was about a 2 hour stretch up on 93. The State blew it BIG TIME! Abandoned cars everywhere Almost 4 hours to drive the 15 miles. |

Title: Re: My drive home Post by zwibbs/Scott on Dec 14th, 2007, 7:51am It started here at 11am--by 1pm it was a mix of snow and ice--really slow driving. I left my office at 630--Live 21 miles away. Got home at 8:45. You don't realise how many hills you travel through until it snows. They also have to get better road crews here because they didn't do a very good job. The road had about a 3 inch crust of ice, and the whole ride home I was pelted with ice pellets. Main thing is just arriving home safely. |

Title: Re: My drive home Post by Kevin_M on Dec 14th, 2007, 9:34am From the last picture, you can see how slick between lanes, especially with an overnight freeze, and nary a car track changing lanes. What difference would it make which lane anyway. ;;D On the far right, you can even see footprints inbetween lanes still there. Passed probably a couple hundred cars walking. |

Title: Re: My drive home Post by Bethany1 on Dec 14th, 2007, 3:27pm That was absolutly horrible. It took me 3 1/2 hours to get Ben and get home. Its usually about 10 -15 mins TOPS. My brother was stuck in Providence for 8 HOURS. The poor thing. Well, you couldnt do anything about it.. the plows could not get out fast enough. I'm just glad its over and now I can actually see pavement. Now onto tomorrows storm...... |

Title: Re: My drive home Post by cootie on Dec 17th, 2007, 1:21pm Oh I remember crashing in that storm......great pics guys......I went 5 mph bumper to bumper to town goin home the back flat way.....less traffic the other half of the drive thru the valley home but no salt trucks or plows had even touched the roads...it was slick as hell !! I live in a very steep hilly area which makes the commute TWICE as scarey....I'm talkin sum steep hills too and drop offs !!!! Goin thru town was the long route but flatter....still has alot of slope areas to worry about tho which are really rough when ya got to stop at a light and HOPE to stay put then try and take off from and hope to go in the rite direction. But I made it.....crash and cry Pam The news said no snow here till 2:00 pm....but it was already HORRIBLE out before noon ??? Last time I do that......my bad !!!??? |
