Title: Verapmil & Cardio Workout
Post by findjoshua on Feb 4th, 2008, 12:47pm
Hi all.  I've asked this qustion before to some good response.  But I'm casting it out there again.  I asked my neuro and he was not very helpful, my next best guess would be to ask a sports doc.. here it is.

I am taking 360 mg of Verapamil a day.  I take spin classes and cardio workouts often.  I realize that it will be HARDER to raise my beats to the target rate b/c of the Verap, but is it dangerous to attempt to do so? Should I re-adjust my target lower since I'm on the pills?  Will the workouts be as effective?

Anyone out there have any advice?

Thanks all.

Joshua

The drug slows your heart rate.  To me it doesn't make sense to push yourself harder for the sake of a number.

As far as danger, I'd just be worried about the increased wear and tear on knees etc.  If you are achieving the same duration, distance, speed or whatever other metric you use to gague your level of exercise I think you are ok.

I know we are all tought to measure our exercise level by heart rate.  Well yours just got recalibrated.  You now have to recalibrate your percieved workout level.

Good luck.
