I have been thinking about this a lot since, in a recent news report in UK, it was announced that one in five general practioners are disenchanted with their profession and wish to change it. One reason given was too heavy a workload.
This is a lot of doctors who simply do not wish to be doctors. This is also very sad and my first inclination is sympathetic. We all know how it is to be exhausted and unappreciated.
My next feeling was concern. Perhaps your, or my, doctor is one of the disenchanted. A doctor is a human being first, then a medical practitioner - even though the work involved is very critical in its effect. It is no wonder there are horror stories.
I do not trust my doctor, he totally blanked me on the cluster issue. The problem is I do not want to approach him about anything else as a result. I worry that he had a bad reaction to receiving confirmation of my condition from the neurologist and his ego is bashed (Oh, so she went behind my back, did she!)
I worry that he is the one in five.
I am trying to think of a solution that does not involve changing doctors because in NHS Britain this is a hard thing to do without becoming a pariah (I get patronised a lot - lord knows why but I am assuming menopausal middle age is one reason. They did not do this when I was young, slim and pretty anyway!)
Perhaps making an effort to try and relieve the workload on doctors, encourage the old school of doctoring and care, would help. Reinforce the old ideals ...
Then I think of people here who have suffered for twenty years and I just get mad, too. Doctors decided to take up the profession, they swore an oath and while no one can make anyone care about another person - they agreed to alleviate suffering as part of their job.
Maybe I should send copies of my posters to put up in doctors offices. So that when someone comes in in such pain they do not kick them out - perhaps the images will make them softer and provoke some compassionate response.
