Title: How Did We Ever Survive?
Post by ClusterChuck on Dec 9th, 2003, 10:42pm
This is for you!
Most of you should appreciate this...some won't have a clue what it's all about!  According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 50's, 60's, and 70's probably shouldn't have survived.

Our baby cots were covered with brightly colored lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans.

When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip flops and fluorescent 'clackers' on our wheels.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the passenger seat was a treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle - tasted the same.

We ate dripping sandwiches, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.

We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no one actually died from this.

We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us all day and no one minded.

We did not have Play-stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet chat rooms. We had friends - we went outside and found them.

We played elastics and street rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt.

We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits.  They were accidents.  We learnt not to do the same thing again.

We had fights, punched each other hard and got black and blue - we learned to get over it.

We walked to friend's homes.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate live stuff, and although we were told it would happen, we did not have very many eyes out, nor did the live stuff live inside us forever.

We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood.

Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

And you're one of them. Congratulations!

Maybe you did. I have no idea what elastics are. Sounds kinda dirty.

I remember all of that stuff and survived, and I'm not that damn old!  I was just poor and grew up in the rural south.

I remember all that except elastics and street rounders?  And what are nettles?  I remember playing Kick the Can and playing marbles, surprised those weren't on that list.  Pretty neat post Chuck, I'll def be passing that one on!

We also had PE every day in school, and one of the major games was dodge ball.  The PE teacher threw the ball (real hard) and we dodged.  Learned to run real fast!  No parents complained about poor baby getting hurt they just said be quicker. Noone I knew died.

And getting the best grade was a competition and considered way cool to be the smartest.

And you actually got graded for conduct -- and PE.

We had BB-gun fights with our Red Ryder's and no eyes were ever hit, tore the pickets from the neighbor's fence to make swords and no (serious) wounds ever happened and threw rocks at bee hives to aggitate the bees, no one was ever stung.

Now my grandsons/daughters do the same. Hope I don't catch them. Damn kids anyway! It's MY bee hive and I want to knock it down.

Chuck you are right!  I don't ever remember sitting in the house watching cartoons all day or anything.

I (Annie Oakley) was too busy riding my golden stallion (totally make believe) thru the woods shooting (my Daisey B-B gun) at the bad guys who walked thru my little gardens of Jack In The Pulpits and Lillies of the Valley.  They were the landmarks for my buried treasure (fools gold panned from the creek).

Oh, the memories...........

My grandparents have a huge farm.  My cousin and I spent every summer there and we NEVER watched TV.  They didn't have cable, just 2 channels.  We stayed outside, rode dirtbikes, and didn't come inside except to eat and sleep.

Nowadays kids sit inside, watch TV constantly and play video games.  No wonder kids are all stressed out now.  They never get exercise or anything!

Where I live the city spent about 3 million dollars for a recreation center with weight room, indoor jogging track, swimming pool, basketball courts.

Then they spent a hundred thousand bucks to buy busses to take haul the kids there so they can get excerise.

I just love bureaucrats.  [smiley=laugh.gif]

Ever ever there was a statement so true.

I did the math. I should still be grounded and locked in my room until I am 73 years old.

I am with Thomas.  I am still grounded.  I know this to be true, because my Mom just called and told me so.  Somethings never change.

Didn't have TV until I was 3. Channel 4 came on at 4 PM and signed off at 11:30. 1949 wasn't necessarily the golden age of of......of anything for that matter. Neighbors used to have TV parties in the early 50s. As soon as someone got a set, everybody got together and got drunk watching Milton Berle. You had to be drunk to enjoy it.

You played Pong when you were a kid? I'm so old, my badminton shuttlecocks had real feathers and gut strings.

Charlie

I grew up thinking those little 13" black and white Tvs came with wire coat hanger antennas.
