Title: Computer question, I need help!
Post by Patrick_A on Dec 24th, 2003, 6:26am
Pop-ups are killing me. I use Google Pop-up blocker, but no matter where i go, i get Pop-ups always. I suspect i have some spyware on my computer. If i go to a medical site, i get pop-ups for cheap drugs. Somehow they know everywhere i go.
Can someone tell me how i can get that off my computer, and keep them off?

Thanks, Patrick

OK lets just calm down a bit  and take a deep breath..
I presume you are running some form of Microsoft Windows and their Internet Explorer web browser.

A few questions.

How fast is your connection?
You married to that archaic piece of crap browser?

please reply asap. It's late for penguins

OK heres what you do. go to
http://www.opera.com

Download the Opera w/java for your system.

Install it. Open Opera. in the upper left:

click on "file" go to "quick prefferences"

click on "do not accept pop ups"

Rock and roll.

configure that browser any ol way your heart desires. Next time we'll do E-Mail.

You're just updating the browser. NOT the system. MS has not changed their browser engine since version 4.0 it is to say the least  not desirable.
Opera works seemlessly with your system. You just don't have to use IE is all.
You can even tell it to lie and ID itself as IE version 5.o, 5.5 or 6.0. If you want.
If it was any slicker you'd slide off your chair on your ass.

Trust me I'm not paid by anybody. I use Mozilla myself.

I switched to the Opera Browser and I swear by it. I can still click on the IE6.0 should I choose to use that. (why would anyone want to?).

Download Opera. Use IE 6.o to go and get it !  ;;D

Kirk, I love that pic of the penguin in the tub. I started poking around with Linux about 2 years ago when I was building a firewall for my home network. I now have a re-kindled interest.
Opera, huh? I'm kinda fond (don't kill me) of IE but will look into it for one of my PCs @ home. You'll be hearign form me.

You probably have some spyware crap to clean. Go here: http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download and download three files: Spybot Search & Destroy 1.2, the Detection Updates, and the Tools Update. Install Spybot Search & Destroy. Then install the Detection Updates. Then install the Tools Update. Now, run Spybot Search & Destroy and click "Check for problems". When done, click "Fix selected problems" (uncheck anything you are sure you want to keep first). I have found it safe to delete everything it finds (except if you have TurboTax, don't delete C-Dilla or TurboTax will quit working)). Reboot and see if your problems are fixed.

If not, go here: http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/ and download "Hijack This". Run it, and choose scan. It will list everything that runs automatically when you start you PC. DON'T delete anything (not safe if you don't know what you are deleting). Instead, paste the list into a PM and I'll give it a look.

Frank is right on!  In addition to the Spybot, D/L and run Lavasoft's Ad-aware v6 (free).  Whether you change browsers or not, you need to get rid of any viruses or trojans that could possibly be lingering.  Hijack showed evidence of these on my computer after three different anti-virus programs could not detect them.  There is also a program called CWS shredder (free) that you may need to run, but your log from Hijack should be used to determine that.

Lavasoft Ad-Aware will remove the adware
Mozilla Firebird browser - blocks the pop-ups

Patrick,

www.panicware.com has a very simple one (free) if you do not want to jump thru a bunch of hoops.

Sort of like comparing a model T to an i series BMW.

You have to wonder about an O/S that has you click a start button to shutdown. Says something.

Windows - Where do you want to go today
Mac - Where do you want to go tomorrow
Linux - You guys coming are not

IMHO

Kirk,

You recommend Java based Opera over the non-Java?

Thanks

John:

Java based works better with chat rooms etc . Other wise you need to have a JRE or JVM installed with it.

Hey Kirk,

Is there a way of installing the Java after the browser has been installed without it other than uninstall and re-install?

Not all pop-ups are bad....as far as I know you need the pop-up that shows up when you are uploading a pic to Shutterfly, but, I could be wrong.

John:

Go to Sun micro's download site and grab JRE 1.4.2.xx or whatever Suns calling it this week. Just run it as a separete service.

Downloads are here http://www.java.com/en

looks like this...http://www.bluegumdata.com.au/pictures/images/java/95cj02_small.jpg

Think that covers it.

Anything else? I've probably forgot something.
