I was drunkenly propounding the same theory at the weekend, because someone at our conference reminded me that I had "carefully" mentioned it last summer and I had forgotten about it since. The problem is that no-one likes to admit having had contact with herpes because of the sexual connotation, but there are other types as mentioned, and even the sexuallly transmitted kind you can come into contact with and never know and get no symptoms. Wonder how we would get an accurate assessment of CH sufferers without testing it? W P.S. I'm not ashamed to admit that after one smear I was told that I had come into contact with herpes at some point in my life, and I certainly never knew. |

It frequently occurs on the trunk, usually on one side, and covers the skin area corresponding to the area served by the affected nerve. Herpes Simplex Virus I & II cause fever blisters and genital herpes respectively, although they are very similar and you can have genital herpes caused by HSVI. You shed HSV and pass it on to others even when you're not having an outbreak. (Please try not to think about that next time you're having oral sex. ;;D) I get two out of the three. Don't ask me which two and I won't tell. There is a bit of research now into possible infectious cause of diseases that we don't think of as caused by an organism. This included yellow jaundice, glandular fever, dysentery and much more. I also had some "cold sores" that took months to clear up at that time. I had not even thought about this ilness for over 30 years. Reading this post triggered my memory. Is it even remotely possible that this could be the cause of my CH? I sometimes used to think that CH was a virus until I found this site a few years ago and was shot down for my thinking :-/ John |

I didn't get clusters until in my fifties. Bit of a long shot; besides so many people get chicken pox, and the rest get inoculated with it! They should all have clusters, or... |

I believe everyone has clusters (i feel the same way about cancer), but we all just don't have the same trigger to bring the disease to the surface. JMO |

Shingles is an infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the virus that causes chickenpox. Shingles occurs in people who have had chickenpox and represents a reactivation of the dormant varicella-zoster virus. The disease generally affects the elderly, although it occasionally occurs in younger and/or immunodeficient individuals. The first sign is usually a tingling feeling, itchiness, or stabbing pain on the skin. After a few days, a rash [editor removed the gross description of the rash... ] ....within several days. When the rash is at its peak, symptoms can range from mild itching to extreme and intense pain. So if you've had chicken pox, you are carrying this virus. ...Just waiting for shingles to rear it's ugly head. |

Had a viral attack in college that was diagnosed as Bonet Syndrom (sp?) not sure if that was one of the many sypes of herpes that there are. My father is a carrier of herpes simplex. I go through cycles of cold sores. where i will get like 5 at a time and they will stay for about 2 weeks then go away for months at a time. Not sure, but worth a shot. Tiannia |

Post by KarynG on Mar 11th, 2004, 10:40pm I had shingles several times from the time I was about twenty- three until I was thirty (the first sunburn/tan of the season always triggered it for me), and I developed clusters at twenty-eight. I don't know how a connection would fit in with the hippothalamus thing though; maybe shingles is just a fairly common condition. As with most health questions, this is a sensitive topic and to really find out you would probably need a place people could respond anonymously. |
