Rain clattering at the windows
Wind tossing the trees silhouetted against
The soggy gray flannel sky and
Making the house creak as I lace up my boots.

Stand over the bed, gazing down at
My baby daughter, asleep in the dim glow of
The nightstand lamp
Tiny, warm, and snug, her breath like the caress
Of downy feathers

The light lying sweetly across the curved cheek of
My sleeping wife, and my eyes well up with
Such love and gratitude, I am unable to
Contain it within me

Careful to keep the tears in my eyes from falling,
I kiss them softly and leave the house,
Stepping into the gale.
