Oden diagnosed with cluster headaches

Palm Springs Mayor Ron Oden said Tuesday doctors have discovered the cause of his persistent headaches and swollen left eye: cluster headaches.

Cluster headaches are a series of headaches that occur the same time every day for a series of weeks.

"They’re not quite sure what causes it," Oden said, "because I’ve never had them before."

Oden originally was being treated for a migraine.

The mayor said he’s been feeling better lately, although his left eye is still swollen and sensitive to direct light.

During the City Council meeting last week, he had to wear an eye patch.

"The eye is still swollen," Oden said. "They’re more worried about that then the headaches."

Well, that's really too bad for him... :(
I can't help thinking that if more high profile people get CH, someone might actually take an interest in finding a cure...or is that just wishful thinking?  :-/

I'm with Jonny on this one -- Let's let him KNOW we UNDERSTAND and hope to hell HE finds a cure for his ailment. Imagine - a swollen eye!

Of course I'm a woman - I can't have them so I'll just go lie down in a dark room with an ice pack.....

I've been searching for a Palm Springs CA government site but have come up with diddly so far.

Hopefully the site would have contact information.

I'm pretty sure the last mayor of Palm Springs was Sonny Bono, now that might have been worth something.  It's a largely cerimonial position so don't get your hopes up. I'm surprised it even came up at all. Not exactly high profile. Need a movie star or a bigtime professional athlete.

I wrote him too. Short and sweet.

If you write, no more than three paragraphs, preferably two have more effect.

Hope he at leasts looks around.

Dear Mr. Oden:
Please add my name to those cluster headache sufferers who I am sure contacted you. I sincerely hope your diagnosis is incorrect and you do NOT have this terrible condition that steals so much from our lives.

We have been looking for a "posterchild"--someone prominent enough to catch the attention of people who can help us find a cure for this rare and poorly understood affliction. We have contacted Oprah Winfrey, Montel Williams and a host of other celebrities to no avail--we usually get no response whatever.

If you can help us--and even if you CAN'T--I guarantee WE can help YOU.

done,
This is what I sent
Dear Honorable Sir,
I was informed of you recent diagnosis of Clusterheadaches through a
message board, www.clusterheadaches.com that is dedicated to sufferers like
yourself. I would first of all like to express my sorrow of learning that
you have been diagnosed with CH but also my relief that you have been
properly diagnosed.
You will find in your search for relief that not much is known about CH
accept by a handful of Neurologists or GPs. Although there is unfortunately
no cure for the malady as yet, there are treatments and therapies that help
relieve the pain and lessen the debilitating affects.
I would like to invite you to take a look at CH.com. This site is
supported by a very dedicated and diverse group of people from around the
world who share a single goal, to help and support others with CH. It has
been a life saver for countless people over the years and to this day is at
the forefront of all issues related to Clusterheadaches.

Sincerely

edited to get the whole thing in there

Nice letter, Robert. Way to go, folks! :)

Did anyone mention that we wouldn't flog him TOO badly for being a politician?  ;;D

I hope it works.  Charlie was right about  keeping notes short. This is a super important guy!!!  Also, all these politician pukes have staff that dump their emails - no questions asked.

How 'bout a strategy?

First, someone that lives within this oddball's city limits..  Could help?

Then,  appeal to his "softer" side.  Perhaps PittJoe could help?

Then there's the black angle...  Got to be some blacks on this board that can think of some meaningful current topic that could get this guy's attention for long enough to read 2 paragraphs.

Also, I've been told actual letters with a stamp have a better chance of being seen by the eyes of their intended recipient?

So you figure because he's black and gay, he's only interested in those who are black or gay? Jeez, marlin...you are becoming an equal oppoptunity offender.

Am I being cynical here, but doesn't anyone find these quotes a little out of line?
Anyone else wear an eye patch?
Still swollen?
More concerend about the eye patch than the HA's?
Things that make TomM go Hmmmm...

It might be a better idea to offer him help before trying to press the guy into service.

Maybe he doesn't want to be a poster child. Maybe he just wants some support and treatment suggestions like any other sufferer.

trying to get through the filterers

Dear Sir,
This email is intended for Mr. Ron Oden however, if is to be screened by a staff member I would ask that this information be passed along.
But first a short note. As a non sufferer of Clusterheadaches, which I assume that you are, it is impossible for you to understand the extreme pain that this malady causes. It is a relatively rare discorder that is not yet well understood. www.clusterheadaches.com is a private message board devoted to the treatment of clusterheadaches. Based on the newspaper reports of Mr. Oden's migrain/clusterheadaches diagnosis it would appear that Mr. Oden's doctors are not well informed about CH. This is unfortunatley not unusual, hence the improtance of the clusterheadache site.

Dear Mr. Oden,
I am sure by now that you have received a number of emails from members of www.clusterheadaches.com Please feel free to  browse through the site as a guest. You will not be required to sign in or otherwise divulge your identity. You will find an endless amount of information related to clusterheadaches. This site was initiated by a sufferer a number of years ago and is dedicated soley to the treatment of Clusterheadaches and the support of clustreheadache sufferers. The information provided by this site is routinely used to educate and inform sufferers and doctors about clusterheadaches
We all know what it is to be looked at strangely and misunderstood  by nonsufferers. Rest assured that you are not alone.

Welcome Aboard
