Title: OT: While You Slept
Post by Jeepgun on Dec 23rd, 2004, 9:35am
While You Slept

While you slept, did you know that a
hundred angels bent low to caress your cheek?

Did you know that another score of celestial warriors
stood guard around your bed with
swords of light at the ready?

And did you know that God Himself,

so deeply in love with you

leaned close to brush your brow with

a kiss so tender

that all the stars in the heavens trembled!

Thanks, Nani. Here's a better one, written by Hafiz in the 12th century, translated from the original Persian by Daniel Ladinsky in his book, "I Heard God Laughing; Renderings Of Hafiz"

"Ever since Happiness heard your name,
It has been running through the streets trying to find you.

And several times in the last week,
God Himself has even come to my door --
Asking me for your address!

Once I said,
'I thought You knew everything.
Why are you asking me
Where your lovers live?'

And the Beloved replied,

'Indeed, Hafiz. I do know Everything--
But it is fun playing dumb every once in a while.
And I love intimate chat
And the warmth of your heart's fire.'

Maybe we should make this poem into a song--
I think it has potential!

How does this refrain sound,
For I know it is a Truth:

Ever since Happiness heard your name,
It has been running through the streets
Trying to find you.
And several times in the last week,
God Himself has come to my door --
So sweetly asking for your address,
Wanting the beautiful warmth of your heart's fire."

-Hafiz

Aw, shucks... :) Thank you, Danielle. :)

I spent years searching for God, through path after path, religion after religion... Funny how, the last place I thought to look, was within; and all around, in every whisper of the wind, in every flower, in the light in every child's eyes...

Rumi wrote, "'Lo, I am with you always,' means that when you look for God, God is in the look of your eyes."

(From the poem, "Be Melting Snow," in the book, "The Essential Rumi," tr. from Persian by Coleman Barks)

:)

Frank, you really are good at this.  Here's a thought... collect your good poems that relate to babies, like this one could.  New mothers will eat this up, reading to their newbord kids...  You can publish this stuff!
