Title: Airport BS  (not ch)
Post by Charlie on Dec 24th, 2004, 1:11pm
It never occurred to me but I see the airport Nazis are making everybody unwrap all their gifts......

Nice time to put that on the news here...the 24th. It should have been part of the lead-ins for a week.  http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/furious.gif

Oh and Merry Christmas anyway. http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/santa.gif

Charlie (who is taking a break to nurse a nasty Christmas cold  >:( )

Charlie,

I understand the unwrapping of Christmas gifts may seem heartless but there is a certain uncomfortableness about being on a plane with 200 other people in the cabin, and 20 or so have wrapped gift boxes under the seat in front of them.  In this day and age, and if people carrying them are of a "different" nationality, or not, it creates much more anxiety about flying.  No surprises onboard.

I know what you're saying but rather than do followups on Martha Stewart, Scott Peterson, and what Paris Hilton is up to on cable news, they could have let people know every day for a week. At least Buffalo TV news mentioned it. No doubt those who got tickets on line had some notice though.

Actually online it is not very predominantly mentioned, if mentioned at all.  You are right, by the time you get to the airport with wrapped gifts, it is a poor time to find out.  Anyone would naturally figure, how dangerous can a wrapped Christmas gift be.
I know you are a news watcher Charlie, so the fact that such a practical piece of information for the heavy holiday travel has been neglected to be mentioned, except maybe in a short passing statement, makes the important news seem backseat.  Just reports on tv that show the long lines and, when it snows, the cancelled flights, warning you to go early and plan to stay late, are shown.  Lots of inexperienced flyers travel at Christmas and it's not a thought to call and ask about such an innocent detail.
Well, I posted TSA's number and websight and will again if anyone has questions.   I suppose they would be busy at this time, I have a list of do's and don'ts also.

Knitting needles are ok now!   ;;D

October 2001

Flying to Nashville....44 seats, 11 people (Go figure ;;D )

TSA says "Whats that"...I say "Its a Zippo case on my belt"......lady grabs my lighter and removes the guts, hands the shell back.......says "This could ignite in flight.

Fast forward 10 mins........................

Im standing near the check point looking out the window watching planes takeoff (I love that shit) and I get a tap on the shoulder........its the TSA lady that took my lighter, she hands me a Bic lighter and says....."You will probably needs this to light your butts"

WTF!!?

Jonny,

The only thing I can think of, (other than her lack of social graces), is that lighter fluid is listed as a flammable item along with aerosols and gasoline, whereas butane is not.   I have no idea about the chemistry of it all, but interesting point because strike-anywhere matches are forbidden too.  WTF is right.  Interesting question for TSA but the screeners have total determining authority and may even prohibit a permitted item from passing through if possibly considered dangerous in some way.

*hmmm, areosols - bad,  Bic lighter - good.

Maybe she couldn't take her eyes off of you Jonny and wanted a reason to come over and say something while still exerting her authority.   ::)    ;)

Ya got my curiousity up bro.

Checking just a touch further, if butane is considered an aerosol, then they are permitted in limited quantities.  That distinction, or exception is not mentioned for lighter fluid.

AZ getting on the horizon    ;)

Any chance we can make that a "civil liberty" and not limit it to airports?

Sure1  It's a short drive for you to NY.  Hillary Clinton wears loose clothes... some refer to her chic attire as Shriners Tent canopies.  Anyhow, feel away.  Just ready to run if she gets that glimmer in her eye. Bill always manages to get away in the nick of time.

This was all over the news here, Chicago this year, just the same as it was last year and the year before.  At O'Hare, they will wrap your gifts once you get through security, just like they did last year and the year before.  The gold and silver foil found on wrapping paper causes the screening machines to go wacky.  Kinda like when you get an Xray and they ask you to take off your gold or silver jewerly.  Please, Charlie, get a grip.  If someone blew up a plane and it was found that the bomb was in a wrapped "gift", you would be the first one to bitch because the TSA's weren't doing their job.  Do you still have to have it both ways... ::)

Leaving Barajas airport in Madrid on Thursday morning, we were singled out by customs and required to empty everything from our luggage.  Shake out all our clothes, X-ray all the electronic items.  It was inconveinent but made me feel safer knowing they do that.

We were dead center in the Thursday evening fiasco in Philadelphia on US Airways.  Got home 5 hours late and our luggage is still on vacation somewhere.

International travel sucks!

I INSIST that they "feel me up" - only excitement I get these days.

Didn't get my Christmas presents from sister-in-law -- she spent 3 days in Cincinatti and her luggage is somewhere. Geezz, she didn't look so good without her makeup (in her suitcase along with my present!) She left today trying to get back to DC -- maybe we'll hear from her by spring. :D

Welcom home Bob -- how was Spain? Did you run with the bulls or anything exciting?

When you're flying - you just gotta roll with the flow... getting upset doesn't get you there any faster (actually I've thrown two fits in my life at airports - both at O'Hare! I think I can go back there about 2009). Wait till you get home and THEN write the airline and they'll usually send you some free tickets. You just gotta explain it to them nicely.

Hugs BD

Jesus Tom & Co. I didn't say it was necessarily a bad idea, I mean that it was just a pain in the ass. It was something I hadn't thought of. I really hope this clears it up for yuz.  http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/pet.gif

What friggin' mess developed this weekend though with the glitch.  :o
