James Dickey did write a poem about kudzu - great guy, he was poet-laureate of South Carolina, author of Deliverance, etc. etc. He did make the mistake of attending Clemson, but saw the error of his way after a year and left that despicable institution. Quote: Japan invades. Far Eastern vines Run from the clay banks they are Supposed to keep from eroding. Up telephone poles, Which rear, half out of leafage As though they would shriek, Like things smothered by their own Green, mindless, unkillable ghosts. In Georgia, the legend says That you must close your windows At night to keep it out of the house. The glass is tinged with green, even so, As the tendrils crawl over the fields. The night the kudzu has Your pasture, you sleep like the dead. Silence has grown Oriental And you cannot step upon ground: Your leg plunges somewhere It should not, it never should be, Disappears, and waits to be struck Anywhere between sole and kneecap: For when the kudzu comes, The snakes do, and weave themselves Among its lengthening vines, Their spade heads resting on leaves, Growing also, in earthly power And the huge circumstance of concealment. One by one the cows stumble in, Drooling a hot green froth, And die, seeing the wood of their stalls Strain to break into leaf. In your closed house, with the vine Tapping your window like lightning, You remember what tactics to use. In the wrong yellow fog-light of dawn You herd them in, the hogs, Head down in their hairy fat, The meaty troops, to the pasture. The leaves of the kudzu quake With the serpents' fear, inside The meadow ringed with men Holding sticks, on the country roads. The hogs disappear in the leaves. The sound is intense, subhuman, Nearly human with purposive rage. There is no terror Sound from the snakes. No one can see the desperate, futile Striking under the leaf heads. Now and then, the flash of a long Living vine, a cold belly, Leaps up, torn apart, then falls Under the tussling surface. You have won, and wait for frost, When, at the merest touch Of cold, the kudzu turns Black, withers inward and dies, Leaving a mass of brown strings Like the wires of a gigantic switchboard. You open your windows, With the lightning restored to the sky And no leaves rising to bury You alive inside your frail house, And you think, in the opened cold, Of the surface of things and its terrors, And of the mistaken, mortal Arrogance of the snakes As the vines, growing insanely, sent Great powers into their bodies And the freedom to strike without warning: From them, though they killed Your cattle, such energy also flowed To you from the knee-high meadow (It was as though you had A green sword twined among The veins of your growing right arm-- Such strength as you would not believe If you stood alone in a proper Shaved field among your safe cows--): Came in through your closed Leafy windows and almighty sleep And prospered, till rooted out. -- James Dickey |
| I updated the kudzu article yesterday - included a small photo of a kudzu flower. Click on that, and it opens a full sized image. Its a beautiful flower, for sure. http://med-owl.com/clusterheadaches/tiki-index.php?page=Kudzu

Who knew there was actually kudzu poems out there!? Kewl. That is a pretty flower. Too bad you can't plant "a little" in the garden. It appears that if we find this to be the "real deal" relief wise and we can keep the drug companies out of it....we might never have to worry about running out of it.

| Unfortunately, the weed control geniuses are hard at work trying to find natural enemies for kudzu - they are looking for insects and fungi that will keep it from taking over. But my guess is that kudzu won't be rare anytime soon. On the brighter side, the biocontrol program for fire ants seems like it is starting to work in this corner of the state.

The Ballard of Henry Lee - by Al King Henry Lee was driving hard, down a lonely country road. His head was working overtime on an extra heavy load. The wind outside his pickup truck was whipping up a storm. The lightning shot big thunderbolts at every moving form. Then all at once he felt a funny grabbing from the rear. It happened several times, forced him into lower gear. The lightning made the sky like day, just enough for him To see a terrifying sight before the night went dim. A kudzu patch had gotten loose and headed 'cross the road In search of something else to climb before it all got mowed. It curled around a crosstie he was hauling in the back, Then got inside the cab with him by crawling through a crack! The creeping thing came at him as he shoved her into low, And gave her all the gas he could to make that pickup go. But nothing has a chance against a kudzu patch gone wild. It grabbed his bumpers, front and back, and then got really riled! They found him in November, after Jack Frost has made his call. The kudzu leaves had withered as they do late in the fall. And all made speculation as to what has caused his death - A heart attack, or liquor, which was sometimes on his breath. But no one could have guessed the truth because they didn't see The kudzu patch that crossed the road and lassoed Henry Lee!

Bumpity BUMP! I started kudzu yesterday (Friday). I have the pure stuff, liquid extract with nothing else in it (because I wanna know if it does do something that it really is the kudzu). This "cycle" (if you can call it that) has been an odd one, but it has been pretty consistent in that it strikes early Saturday morning - effectively ruining my weekend. Coincidence or not, I did not get hit this morning. Or rather, whatever is going on is very different. If a true hit is like very loud, annoying music, the kind that thumps your entire body, then a shadow is like that same music on low, still there, but only mildly annoying. Well, this morning I have what is like hearing that annoying music through a closed door. Barely a whisper. And I'm not even certain it is there. Weird. Oh, and FYI, I only use O2 for my CH. I long ago gave up on any other prevents or abortives. Thanks, Nani! Hirvimaki-Isi

This is my 25th day without a hit. I was startled awake this morning and started to feel like a hit might be coming. I got really nervous...and just as quickly as I felt it might come on...it was gone. A 2 minute jab. Still shadowing ever so slightly.

| Your description, in my opinion, is a very good one. This is what I am feeling, though I haven't known how to express. Like hearing music through a door. This leads me to ask...Is the Kudzu masking the pain, or is it effectively lowering the activity in the nerve, or...I guess, what in the heck is it doing. I still do feel "activity" on the right side of my head, but it is not so much painful as it is just "there..." BTW - where do you get Kudzu extract? Casey

I am in between cycles but getting hit with horrible migraines . NOthing but fun. I am gonna give this stuff a try. I will let you all know. I have the kind of migraines that so far no med has helped including a TIA from them. Don't ask how sick they make me feel. Then when I get in cycle I have to deal with the CH plus the damn migraines. That is when I feel suicidal. I am praying this could help. Thanks you all. I went to the web site and called the natural center I go to. They got the kudzu.

| After that strange "music through the door" sensation on Saturday and a bit of the same thing yesterday, I have been entirely PF. I really can't say what the kudzu is doing, or rather how it is doing it, but I am just glad it seems to be working. on Mar 3rd, 2005, 11:42am, clarence wrote:BTW - where do you get Kudzu extract? |
| From a store called Sunflower Market. They are a chain of natural food stores in New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada. When my wife went in to look for kudzu, they pulled it out of a box that had just arrived that day! They had never carried kudzu before. Luck was smiling on me that day. Hirvimaki-Isi
