This may or may not help you...
The important thing about having this condition is to try to maintain your sanity. Don't let the beast win.

Since I stopped all meds a year ago, I rely mainly on 02.
Of course, it doesn't always work as fast or as well as we wish. Everytime I get hit, I go into a different mode. I try to focus on anything but the pain. And that's extremely difficult to do, no doubt.... but with practice I've been able to make those attacks more bearable.
Focus on music, bad TV, or think very hard  about something and analyze it in your head as the beast messes you up.

When it's over, go back to be who you are... don't think about what just happened or what's coming up next.
Try to be happy about something no matter what it is...
a family member, your spouse, something good to eat...

As I get hit multiple times per night, day after day, I get to practice this method a lot. It truly helps me.

Look at CH as something you have to do on a daily basis, just like taking a crap. Yep, a painful crap or multiple crap indeed, but move on the minute it's over...

None of us (I hope, but could I be wrong) don't stay by the porcelain bowl after taking a dump and feel sorry about how bad it was, staring at it crying.. right???

So do the same with your CH attacks. Put the lid down, and flush it. Move on... do something you love...

Any questions?

Rex

Good on you Rex, that is so true!!

If I get woken with a hit there's not much to do but ride it out... but during the day as soon as I get the twinge I get busy, frantic even, you've never seen me get up so quick to start on the house work!! And sometimes it even works.

Luckily for me I am pf at the moment but next time... I'm gonna remember what you said about crying over a shit.  It might just help  Wink

Thanks,

Kate

That's some of the best advice I've seen on this website! I've had to learn to 'flush it' and move on years ago. I learned it the hard way too. Angry

See the full quote above

Oh wow Rex, you are so 100% right. And coping is exactly the right word. We've all been there when the meds, or O2, or alternatives just did not work. Now what...

Ride it out? Been there. Wanna try something else?  I know you do.

This may sound weird but as a wise man once told me "desperate people do desperate things". basically its a form of meditation (which I know nothing formally about) and another way of stating what Rex has already said.

When the hits come, and nothing else works, I FORCE myself to concentrate. Surround the center of the pain with a circle and enclose it. Tell myself it is not pain but a "thing", do not allow it out, slowly close the circle, squeeze the bastard out, DO NOT give in to the pain!
Does this work every time. Nope! Does this even work MOST of the time, NOPE!. Does this work once in a while? Damn right! The satisfaction and relief is indescribable (see descriptions of people finding O2 or triptans for the first time). Am convinced if I had the training AND the will power it would work more often.

It IS exhausting (as much as the CH itself). it takes enormous concentration (try that with a kip 8-10) but its another option that you should at least consider. What have you got to lose?

Regards

Thats some real good advice, Rex.
Yes the pain is bad, and the no sleep for 6 to 10 weeks sucks too, but keeping my sanity is probably the hardest thing for me.
Thanks a lot man.

Absolutely, Rex.

We all do whatever we have to do to cope, and then get on with our lives.  I, personally as I'm rocking back and forth, say "go to He** you bitch"(my CH is female, I just know it), over and over until she's gone.  And then, I get up and go about my business for the day.  I try desperately not to think about the next hit.

Putting the lid down and flushing is one thing, mate, but this one's stuck in the S-bend. Otherwise, great advice.

I never thought of CH's like taking a crap before. But since you put it that way, I think instead of taking a crap, it's more like taking a piss. When it's over, you shake it off.  If you hold on too long, it's hard to let go.  Grin

Flushing, flushing and flushing - and it just keeps floating back.  Ever have one like that? Try every trick you've got and , gazoompah, it's still there looking you in the face and laughing.

Still, if that's the beast personified, it's also the best place for it.

I've got a few I use.... one goes kinda like this
shit fuck shit fuck shit fuck oh ouch shit fuck.... and so on and sometimes its just kind of
oooooh  grunt grunty  fuck  grunt ooooh fuck

It doesn't necessarily help with the pain tho - but for the life of me if it's a bad one I'll be doing it - otherwise I'm reduced to tears, screaming and jumping about.

Oh Kate,

No apologies necessary as far as I'm concerned. It's called coping. You do whatever you gotta do.

A mantra happens most of the time (for me anyway). It just is; like the rocking, pacing, head squeezing, screaming...

Sometimes profane, sometimes stupid, sometimes pleading. Can't say whether it helps or not, it sure doesn't make it worse, and maybe, just maybe, it allows
the briefest respite we all crave if you can concentate on SOMETHING else, ANYTHING else.

Regards
