WATCH OUT FOR CORN!!!!!!!!!
« on: Oct 24th, 2005, 3:30am »

For the first time in 35 years of entertaining these BASTARDS.......is it possible that my very favorite, seemingly harmless food has been the culprit all this while?????????  I refer (as you may have guessed) to CORN.  I don't mean as a trigger...but as an actual cause.  I was shocked to learn, for the first time that corn is the primary source of many of our favorite nemesis........MSG!!!  While I have had "visits" that began in virtually every month/season of the year (and I eat corn year round), by far July and August have been the beast's most frequent flier for me.........months that I actually grow and eat corn by the droves. I recently began looking at the ingredients of foodstuffs that seem to trigger my attacks during my cycle.......HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!....is there ANYTHING that DOESN'T include corn- something -or- other????--------including alcohol!!!!!!
Now I know statistics suggest many of you might be considered heavy drinkers / smokers....are there any heavy corn eaters too?

Well....one thing you may be glad to know is that MSG is not a cause of any headache disorder.  It can be a trigger for migraine but is rarely a trigger for CH, although there may be some here that have found it to be a trigger.  There is literature stating that food triggers are not really linked to CH with the exception of alcohol, tobacco, and a couple of other things.  (This can be read in Wolff's Headache by Silberstein et al)

While it could be that the MSG in corn does trigger some attacks for you, it's not the cause of CH.  Cluster headaches are believed to stem from a possibly genetic disorder in the hypothalamus, affecting the trigeminal nerve.

So which is it do you think....a cause or a trigger?
I drink water year round....hmmmmm...maybe I should be taking a look at that.  I don't doubt that the American diet leaves a lot to be desired, but I think we would have figured it out by now if any one food item was actually a cause.  There are plenty of people around the world with CH who aren't big corn eaters. Undecided

I have no such MSG trigger (and I eat corn without problems), but for those that do:

For a few clusterheads, MSG may aggravate their CH situation.  If you're really interested in avoiding MSG, you'll have to closely read food labels.

These things contain (or are) MSG:

glutamate
glutamic acid
gelatin
monosodium glutamate
calcium caseinate
textured protein
monopotassium glutamate
sodium caseinate
yeast nutrient
yeast extract
yeast food
autolyzed yeast
hydrolyzed protein
hydrolyzed corn gluten

These things often contain MSG:

textured protein
carrageenan
vegetable gum
seasonings
spices
flavorings
natural flavorings
chicken flavoring
beef flavoring
pork flavoring
smoke flavoring
bouillon
broth
stock
barley malt
malt extract
malt flavoring
whey protein
whey protein isolate
whey protein concentrate
soy protein
soy protein isolate
soy protein concentrate
soy sauce
soy extract

Also, MSG can be a natural vegetable by-product.  For example, as a tomato ripens, the level of glutamate rises.  Glutamate can also be the by-product of a fermentation process such as with aged cheese.  The body processes artificial MSG and natural glutamates in the same way.

Corn syrup has replaced 90% of other refined sugars that used to be used.
From soda pop to fruit juices and you will find most products in the grocery store use it.
Few real foods exist as we think they do, lots of Jellies and jams= corn syrup with artificial flavorings added
Check your labels.
Staple crops millions of acres corn and soybeans. we dont eat it all raw. Now its filling our gas tanks.
Corn is used to make our meat our animals are all finished off with corn.
most of our proteins (starches) come from corn.
Even being used now for synthetic cloth and fibers.
You cant escape it, you too will be assimilated.

You know, my family and I talk about what might trigger my headaches.  My son, 8 yrs old, said that he thinks the following should be avoided-not just by me, but by the whole family: Grin
spinach
all leafy greens
carrots-unless drenched in brown sugar and cinnamon
all meats except hot dogs, fried chicken strips and tacos
I really try to ignore his advice.
It's difficult-he's rather persistent.   Roll Eyes

p.s. if you think corns a trigger for you-don't eat it.

Corn consists mostly of carbohydrates and some proteins. Maybe the latter are used as raw material to produce the nerve poison MSG. But that does not mean that corn products contain natural MSG. It's like iron, we need it in our blood to transport oxygen, but it can also be used to make paper clips or cannons.

BTW, in Europe corn is mostly fed to cattle and pigs. Cows don't get CH, but people get it without eating corn.

Are you absolutely certain that you have clusters?
The reason I ask is that my mother has a type of allergic asthma and her primary allergin is corn.  It triggers all sorts of symptoms including, sometimes an excruciating headache along with the allergy-like symptoms ie. watery eyes and nose.
Just a thought.
