Title: Moderate CH Cure From Starch?
Post by Chaucer on Dec 14th, 2005, 7:51pm
I have suffered from cluster headaches for 18 years.  Mine hit for 1 month in the spring and 2 months in the winter.  During these episodes I'll suffer up to 4 attacks per day.

I've been through the typical reactions: cursing, screaming, moaning; wondering how any merciful God could allow a person to suffer this amount of pain for no good reason.  I'm sure you all know where I'm coming from.

I've been to countless doctors who have prescribed countless meds - all without any relief.

Recently I met a very good friend who is a doctor.  Not only an MD, but who had a holistic practice as well for several years.  I'm not into rocks, crystals and incense burning, but I'm willing to try anything.

My friend suggested starch and advised that upon the next onset of a cluster headache, I should boil a pot of water and make pasta.  Try not to laugh at this unusual idea until you have tried it.  I've found that if I can actually manage to eat some pasta during a CH, I stand a genuine 30/70 chance of lessening the severity of the CH or averting it completely.  It does not always work, but when possible I try it.  Now and then I get lucky.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

between the pacing and rocking and smoking and slugging coffee I don't think I'd be able to do so.

Yes, pubgirl, I must admit it takes discipline to do it.  I avoided this idea for the very reasons you suggested until it became a matter of selling my soul or trying the pasta.  I figured the clusters force me to live in hell and I don't want an eternity of this, you know?  It really takes everything in you to do it, but a 30/70 chance of relief is better than a full blown cluster, no?

Is it possible that by the time the pasta is done, your attack is over anyway? Try bread (also starchy) and see if it does it.
Glad it works for you sometimes, but I'd look into other treatments. pain free wishes, nani

Well, um, there's no way I could make pasta while in the midst of an attack.  And even if I had it made beforehand, I don't think it'll make a difference.  What I DO know tho, is that when I'm in cycle (especially right before) I carb load like crazy and it continues until the cycle ends.  I'm pretty sure it's due to all the energy used for the attacks at night I get.

Take care,
mel

Make a nice "shroom" sauce and pour on top.  Then it might actually work  [smiley=laugh.gif].
