Title: about me
Post by Brian_MN on Feb 17th, 2004, 11:51pm
I have been visited by the beast for the last 18 years.  Just last year I finally found a doctor that knew what I was going through.  We talked for about 2 minutes.  he asked me to describe the headaches. Just looked at me and wrote the prescription for Imitrex.  Had one doctor tell me I blew my nose too hard.  Good one, HUH?(LOL)

Hi Brian,

Welcome to the board.

Good to see you have the meds you need to fight the beast.

There's great support here, and lifelong friends to be made.

Stay in touch and let us know how you are doing

PF vibes,

Jean

The sad part about having the meds is my insurance company will only let me have 12 doses of Imitrex Nasal Spray every 26 days.  Have 4 Children can't afford to buy them on my own.

Brian,

The limitations on the meds is and has been an on-going problem for most all of us.

This is one of the goals for OUCH.  The docs and drug manufacturers need some education in reference to CH.

The insurance companies need the most education.  Makes no sense.......they approve it the first time (insurance co)....then when you go back to re-fill, it's limited.  Well, if we needed it the 1st time...and they give it to us...what the hell is the problem when we go back for the rest that we need.  If CH only lasted 1 or 2 days a month, then no problem.  But when in cycle...this could go on for months for some.  Alot of folks here are chronic.  Some have lost their jobs, their insurance and their families.  How can they put a limit on this when the chronics are hit several times a day and night, all year long.

Alot of folks here take the imitrex injections....there is an imitrex tip located on the left in those links.  Should you ever get the injections, this is a great tip to show how to get 3 shots from 1.

PF vibes.......

Jean

I read a book about CH's and it said that caffeine sometimes help reduce the intensity of CH's.  So I tried more coffee and NoDoz.  Finally tried Mountain Dew it stops them dead if I drink it early enough when the CH starts.  Doesn't always work, but usually.  Only works for me during the day.  The night ones are too far advanced for this to work.

Someone posted about chugging down a Coke to stop the CH.  Said if he did it real fast...it would abort.

Just be very careful with the Mountain Dew.  It is loaded with caffeine.  My husband was drinking 6 - 7 a day.  Caused him to have heart palpitations.  We went thru 3 months of tests....and then an angiogram.

He had no blockage that was significant....but had tightness in his chest and problems being short winded.

Discovered his problems were a result of a caffeine rush, caused by the MD.  As soon as he quit drinking them...all the problems and symptoms went away.

Just be careful....especially since you have the imitrex.  Some here have rebound ha's from the trex.  And the trex can't be taken by those with heart problems.  Of course, we are all very different.  The same thing does not work for all.  I went on a Prednisone taper last Sept.
The first pill I took got rid of my CH.  Have been pf ever since.  But for most here....when they start to taper down on the Pred...their ha's return.  Guess I was just lucky it worked for me.  I don't trust the beast.....I figure one day.....he'll be back.

Jean

Welcome Brian,

Imitrex is alway in tight supply for us.  Be sure to keep a supply going after these headaches have ended for the next time.  Also, many people use O2 to abort these headaches and cut down the usage of imitrex.  You might want to try melatonin as it has worked for many of us (look at the old messages on melatonin).  And yes, coffee does help.  Hope you have relief soon.

regards,

John

I just wanted to thank all of you for your support and making me feel so welcome on the board.  It is really a relief to talk to others about CH's and they know what they are all about.

Thank you again. 8) 8) 8) 8)

Sorry to have to welcome you, but so glad you found us.

You did not mention oxygen.  It is a life saver for many!  Get your doctor to give you a script for it.  It is a lot easier on your system.  Read the button on the left oxygen info and follow the instructions there.  It MUST be done as they say or it will not work.

Hey Brian.

On my way home many times, I would get an attack on the Causeway (24 mile bridge).

When I finally got off of the bridge, I'd pull into the Shell station, get a large Mountain Dew, sit on the tail gate and sluge it down.  Within about five to ten minutes it would go away.

I did not know if it was the fact that I had finished that part of my commute that the headache ended or if it was the Dew.  But I never tested it.  I just wanted the thing to stop and this always worked.

Hell, if standing on my head and lining BB's along the edge of my upper eyelids made the headache go away, I'd learn to do that.

Welcome.

Steve G

here's another 2 cents...

Dr. Pepper has more caffine than Dew....
You are in good hands here, we've all been there and virtually NOTHING is unheard of.

Welcome,
Ramon

Hrmmm....
Soda doesn't help me...it has to be HOT coffee...stronger the better.  Maybe it's the scalding pain for me that helps?
