Title: She ran calling Wild Fire!
Post by Gator on Jan 1st, 2006, 8:37pm
Got a fire burning less than a mile to East of my house.  Luckily, the wind is blowing out of the West.  Unluckily, there is a fire burning about 2 miles to my West.

This shit is ridiculous.  78 degrees and winds been gusting to over 60mph today.  On New Years Day?  WTF?

I saw those fires on our newscast here tonight and heard about the winds.

Stay safe Mike - that's awfully close to you.

Please keep us posted - sending good luck wishes from the frozen north.

Carol

Definitely gonna be checkin my 6 for a while.

Between the smoke from the fires and the dust in the wind, an otherwise sunny day looked like the sky does just before it snows.  Looking out across the field to my east, the air was a light greyish brown.

I've been following this on the news and thinking about you--hoping that you weren't anywhere near the fires.  I'm wishing for a quenching rain for you.  Be watchful and safe.

Latest weather update:  Monday will calm down a little then Tuesday is going to be as bad or worse than today with near record temps, humidity below 20% and high winds.  A front is supposed to move through that is going to pull more dry air up out of the southwest.  Just what we need. ::)

Thanks for the good/wet wishes.  We need them big time right now.

Stay Safe Mike
We got the same thing happening on the East Coast of Aust, wild fires happening in Victoria & New South Wales with 40 deg C + heat.
Got one here on the West Coast near our property but it looks like they may be getting it under control.
People may think me an idiot for having extra large fire breaks & slashing the stubble down real low but I know that our place is gonna be safe specially when we live  2000 kilometres away and can’t do anything about it.
Hope the weather turns better for you.

Kind Regards
Barry

Worked the big So Cal fires in 2003. When it starts getting at all close, get out! These wind whipped fires moved faster and hotter then even the grizzled old veterans could anticipate. When they say it's close enough that they want you to evacuate, skedaddle now! We'll be keeping you in our families prayers, let us know when the rains finally come. That's about the only thing that slows the wind fires.

Mike,

Thinking of ya, hoping the very best for you and yours through this.

Quote:
In Oklahoma, calm winds and higher humidity levels helped firefighters bring the flames under control and officials said late Monday that all major wildfires in the state were under control.

But the National Weather Service said conditions could worsen in the region, predicting low humidity, above-normal temperatures in the 70s and high winds that could make it more difficult to fight fires from the air.

Computer models showed no rain soon, said Jesse Moore, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Fort Worth. He said the region's last appreciable rain was about a quarter-inch on Dec. 20. Oklahoma is more than a foot behind its normal rainfall of about 36 inches for this time of year.

"We're not out of danger yet," said Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry. "We can't let our guard down."

Since Nov. 1, Oklahoma wildfires have covered more than 285,000 acres and destroyed 200 buildings, said Michelle Finch, a spokeswoman for the Agriculture Department's forestry division.

I'm in Oklahoma City, and things aren't as bad as they were on New Years day, people have been heading the warnings it seems, hopefully anyway.  Still warm and windy, but no plumes of smoke can be seen as of yet...

Hopefully, things will stay this way... :-/

We made it through the night here.  The fires close to us were put out.  The skies around my place today (so far) are bright, shiny and clear, but it's already 66 degrees and climbing with 16 mph winds gusting to 25mph.  New fires are starting to pop up around the state.  It's expected to reach the mid-70's with winds gusting to 40+mph.  No rain expected in the near future.  I just saw on the local weather that humidities as low as 15% are moving in from the west.  Not good for the home team.

People can be so clueless.  It's been broadcast in all the media that a lot of these fires are caused by people throwing cigarettes out the car window.  There is now a fine of $168 for tossing a butt out the window, plus paying for damages caused and yet some idiots continue to do so.

No you don't, and you better not or we'll have to start singing Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat".

In fact, forget it, we're just going to have to go ahead and start.....

She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolour in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat
