Post by rickyshot on Jan 11th, 2006, 3:32pm
Well someones got to do it. I am leaving on Saturday to Jamaica for two weeks. My daughter is coming with me. I am very happy about that one. I hope to have PF days.

Have a great time. I did and intend to go back again and again. In Jamaica there are "No Problems Mon!!" (And not too many clothes.......)

We stayed in Montego Bay.  In Jamaca Mon No Problems!  There is lots of poverty so be prepared for that.  We stayed in a 5 star hotel and had goats and pigs running through our hotel lobey.  They have no drinking age and few drug laws so keep an eye out on your kid.  Its a fun place to be!

The 1-5 star rating is the American system. In Jamaica they use a 1-65 star system. A 5 star hotel in Jamaica designates a hotel that has the potential for in door plumbing. Thats where you made your mistake.

Goats and Pigs? Better check the menu.

I have Jamaicans in my family so I am well aquainted with the Island and Jamaican culture. We are staying at my brother's house in Negril. I have a friend there as well (will definitely get my groove back). My daughter is 21 and stopped smoking ganga a year ago, barely drinks too. Now she is working on stopping cigarettes. I sent my youngest son down there two summers ago to stay with my brother and his cousins. His cousins are typical Jamaicans and they had no running water in the bathroom. They toted up water up literally 30 stairs each day to bathe. They wash clothes by hand and believe me they are cleaner than ours. They work hard in their house all day. It was a good experience for a spoiled American kid. He had a ball. Trust me those people eat very well and much better food than Americans and Jamaicans as a whole are fanatically clean.

Negril is great. Stayed there when my son got married. No TV, no news, no nothing but sun and fun for a whole week. I really hated to come back to the real world.

Unfortunately when I relax I get hit BIG TIME, but I managed to have a great time anyhow.

Have some fun for me while you're there.

Hugs BD

If you're staying at your brother's house in Negril and you have CH, you may want to ask your brother or your friend there about Psilocybe Cubensis mushrooms. I believe they are legal in Jamaica.

You kill me.

Reminds of a phone conversation I had at work with a guy from Trinidad.  I had to get his address and he says, "LP #6a, as in Lampost #6."
I said, "You mean you live at #6 Lampost Street?"
He said, "No, Lampost or just LP #6a."
Again I asked, "You mean P.O Box #6?"
He then explains, "No, you know like a street light, the utility pole?  The lampost, I live at L.P #6a, my neighbor is L.P. #6b."

Oh, I get the picture now.  Interesting, and different address system.   ;)

They really do have 4 star hotels in Jamaica. I have stayed at those too. My brothers home is a literal castle and the back yard is the sea. It is gated and private . You go on the street in West End and you never know you passed it. He has electricity, a washing machine and running water everywhere. No air conditioning though, just fans. It is amazing.

'Course Ricky, probably most of the Sandals there are 4-star.  There's a wide variety, probably with different names now.  Did the San Souci the other side of Ocho Rios, something called Turtle Bay Resort at Ocho Rios, Trelawney around Falmouth, a Sandals, a little place in Montego Bay called Toby Inn, and Hedonism II, the first year they converted from just Hedonism.
Round Hill, if I recall was pretty exclusive too, Ian Fleming used to live there.  I remember a certain kind of mahogany wood that Jamaica has that was on some of the doors there.  It has a blue grain running through it.

*I worked in the airline industry and we did lots of business with Jamaica.  After a huge hurricane in the '80's really devasted the island, the minister of tourism invited a few of us down for short stays over several years to help get Jamaica back on its feet by continuing to promote the what we still could, tourism is a huge part of their economy.  He gave us very good conversation on history and economy of the island.

Have a great time Ricky
