Steve - Haggis gets served with tatties and neeps, potatoes and swede (which I think you call rutabaga?) I like the tatties and neeps but I have to admit - haggis isn't a thing I like! I've tried it once and once only (and that was before I knew what it was too!)

WHAT The HELL is a "HAGGIE"???

and why would you eat it before you knew what it was??

and would you please tell me - before someone asks me to eat it and I do because I dont know what it is??

also - what is a neddie??

and a tattie???

I know a Swede, but I wouldn't consider him edible (no offense)...... ::)

but - the MOST important question.......

HOW can you put maple syrup AND parmesan cheese TOGETHER ........ with anything??

and = the most wierd
they dont have margaritas or daiqaries over there........

WOW :o

strange place, that England!

Traditionally haggis is all the disgusting bits of offal slung into a sheeps stomach and boiled.. and if that doesn't make you sick NOTHING will!
Tatties and neeps are mashed potatoes and mashed swede (rutabaga?) and both of those are yummy!

Woobs, I promise you one of these day's I'll cook parsnips for you my way.. you ask Matt what he thought of them!

If you go somewhere like TGI's they serve cocktails but your average pub just doesn't, its not the way the Brits drink, Bacardi and coke, gin and tonic, so on and so forth but not cocktails. In fact if you're a male here you don't tend to drink much beyond lager, bitter or cider nd all three give me the screamin' heebie jeebies *shuddering* I do like my black Russians though and pubs here do serve them (but you usually have to tell them what it is!)

It's quite simple Woobie-

Helen gets neddie when she goes beyond looking tattied to the point of looking haggied ;;D  As for combining maple syrup with parmesan cheese, what do you expect from someone that talks like Mary Poppins?

Now, I feel quite sheepish about my post because I have been Baaaaahhhhhhhad ;;D

A further definition is necessary. Woobie, you may now be wondering what offal is. Well, my dear, it's lung meat. Yes you read right, lung meat. Your'e not even allowd to sell it here. MMMMMM. The closest thing to Haggis here is Scrapple.
Swede, I believe, is Turnip.

In the olden days the preparation of a Haggis went something like this :-

Take the liver, lungs & heart of a sheep and boil them. Mince the meats and mix with chopped onions, toasted oatmeal, salt, pepper, and spices. Take one properly cleaned sheep's stomach. Stuff the cleaned stomach with the prepared contents. Sew up the stomach (leaving enough room for expansion to avoid a large messy explosion) and boil. Serve and eat. Lovely !                                                                                         Eat more beef pls.

I think I heard that you can buy haggis here in the States in a can. They make it without the lungs, which would be an FDA no-no. I even saw Mel Gibson eat it right out of the can on The Tonight Show.

Organ meats and oatmeal. Mmmmm (not). I knew there was a reason Scots wore kilts - quicker time period between the time the bathroom door closes and the time you're seated comfortably.

The Mexicans have a similar nasty item called manudo (sp?). Organs and waste products stuffed  in tripe.
Warning: never go to a Mexican neighbor on a Sunday morning.

I LIKE haggis AND black pudding which is a sausage made of blood, they are offally good (sorry!)  ;;D

Why are they any worse than chittlins or any of the other things listed here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offal

I have to admit that the Brits feature more heavily in the offal cooking than other nations on the Wiki list but then it is po' man's food: cheap, low fat and nutritious. You should try it over there! Liver is wonderful, kidneys divine and braised hearts are rich.

W the B

amended to add: Do we really need a warning not to eat polar bear liver? I don't see myself trying to harvest one.

and Helen and Mary Poppins in the same breath? Me think not!!! Mary Poppins on acid maybe  ;;D

English cooking strikes again... http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/hungry.gif   You can buy Spotted Dick here in a can.  http://www.netsync.net/users/charlies/gifs/glomfood.gif

Even my Swedish Grandmother's boiled gray chicken looked better than this horror.

Bill's right.  Buffalo is GREAT.  Elk's better-tasting than beef.  Venison can be good or bad--I've had both.

Never could develop a taste for pronghorn antelope, though.  It tastes like tomcat fried overnight on an electric chair.

Best,

George
