Title: How often do you see a neuro?
Post by Turts on May 12th, 2008, 10:12pm
Just wondering......

after the intial CORRECT diagnosis, how often do you see a neurologist?

I was diagnosed about 1998. saw a neuro.

then had a chronically episodic bout in 2003 that led to a neuro visit.

I normally just see a gp for verapmil (isoptin here) prescriptions and to get a stock of imigran nasal sprays when required.

should I be getting checked out by a neuro more often?

'heading back in cycle and wondering if i should be trying something else'

I've found that neuros like to know that your entire neurological system is functioning properly. Since my neuro is so responsive when I'm hurting, I figure the least I can do is see him every six months - more often if necessary. But I usually do the "more often if necessary" stuff over the phone or via e-mail.

Ten years I endured this monster before seeing a neuro who diagnosed it.

Ten years later I saw another neuro who tried to kill me.

That was ten years ago but we're all different.

THis is my first cycle seeing a neuro- was always treated by my gp last two cycles

Neuro had me seeing him every two weeks , then at one month.  now at 6 months.  I am episodic - about 4-5 years between cycles.  However this cylcle was so different than the others that even if i'm tempted to stay out of touch with him,  I won't for fear it will hard to reengage if the cycle comes back sooner than expected.

my opinion is if you are wondering if you should see him and you are thinking you are heading back into cycle- then go- you'll probably feel more prepared and ready for battle -

gl to you

My last Neuro visit was a follow up visit to let him know how the higher dose of Verapamil was working for me and MOST IMPORTANTLY how the o2 is working.

I am out of cycle right now but I do call his office about every 6 months or so to let him know how and where I am at with the CH's. My Neuro is the best!!!! [smiley=thumb.gif]

I've seen my neuro every six month for my 50,000 mile checkup for years (every four months if he thinks I need to come in more often). He's on speed dial if I need him in between visits, but he's "there". I'm chronic and it's a comfort knowing that.

Only go as needed during cycles, even then he will try to do everything by phone (he is 100 miles away)  he has us schedule every 6 months but told us to cancel if no HA's and to reschedule for 6 months out, this way we always have an appointment available if we should need it since he can be tough to get into. We have never gone more than a year or so without a visit.  He also gives us presriptions with 11 refills.

So you're saying you're due...  ;)

I have two cycles a year.  I see mine a few weeks to a month ahead of the start of each cycle to talk strategy and make sure I've got my perscriptions in order.  Then I get in to see him as needed during the cycle to adjust things.

He's pretty hands on and we work well together.  And yes, I know how lucky I am. 8)

For many years I saw a neuro monthly to update the status of my chronic ch.  He would write me my scripts etc.  Trying to find a medicine or combo that would work for me to stop ch.  Now that I have something that works I just see my regular gp and she prescribes it for me monthly.  I have a script with 11 refills on it for my imitrix.  I say work with your neuro and what ever you both are comfortable with is good to go!

Once a year to keep the RXs up and coming (O2, verapamil, etc.)

If I could see the neuro who diagnosed me, I'd probably still see neuros regularly. But now I haven't seen one in... 3 years.

Apparently my HMO kicks you out of neurology once you have a diagnosis. You're  allowed two visits and they have to be within a 12 week period. I can call my primary care Dr. and tell him when I need more Topomax, Predisone or Imitrex, and I just call Apria when I need more O2.
