I don’t have a big telephoto to get the whales, but I have: A dolphin leaping A Willet having lunch Pelicans soaring A pelican staring me down (he won ) I don't have any good shots of the Snowy Plovers, but I've read that it takes 14-15 to make Plover pie..........

nice shots... you should come down to our beach, we can see the whales and dolphins very well from the shore usually.

Marc, I don't think I read it anywhere, but what type of camera/lens do you use? Carolyn

Helen, You are far too generous with your comments. I'm a basic camera hack compared to some of the guys I shoot with. Carolyn, I shoot with a variety of stuff. I use a 3MP Fuji 602 a LOT, a 6MP Nikon D70, a 10MP D200 and my old film cameras from the 70’s – 80’s. Mostly I use my old film camera lenses. I don’t see a big improvement in the images I get from each camera - it’s all about the light. Notice that I rarely shoot during the mid-day sun. When I HAVE to shoot in harsh light, I use a lot of flash to balance the light, like this one. You can see that the sun was intense on her side away from the camera. Without some form of fill light, her side facing me was in deep shade. I know that this can be “fixed” in software, but I strongly believe in getting it right in the camera because I think it looks better.

Marc, That's a nice collection of cameras you have (especially that Nikon D200). I have a friend who is a Nikon shooter~he works as a photographer for Dillards. I agree about post processing and I do try not to over use it, but considering my actual knowledge of photography is *slim*, it does come in handy. I am growing my abilities though and I've been lucky to have some friends (not the guy with Dillards, he's a *professional* who didn't have time for a newbie) who have been really encouraging about my hobby. I have fun and that's what counts.

| It's funny, but my best work (defined by most published) is from my lower level cameras. I have a billboard image up right now with 3 images on it. One is a 3MP, one is a 6MP image. You cannot tell which is which. It's all about the light.........

How aobut the photographers of CH putting together a book and adding it to the auction for next years convention? It really doesn't cost that much to have a book made. BLURB does an excellent job and has a tutorial that will help you *walk through* putting the book together. The books are excellent quality. I have one book of theirs that I bought last year~photographs from members of the Canon forum that I'm a member of and I'm waiting with baited breath for the next one (ESPECIALLY, since I have a photograph in the book). http://www.blurb.com/

Helen, Marc really is far too modest. You should see some of the pics he has posted over on calouch in the past. They are truly awesome...just like the one's he shown here. Marc, Light might be an important factor, but one has to have an eye for things like this as well as knowing what camera, lens setting etc. A "hack" you are not. !!!!!!!
