Since my son's guitar tech post became drummer bashing  I figured we needed a little drummer thread.

No doubt, Barry. Krupa was one of the best of all time. I simply mentioned the two I did because they play the style of music I enjoy best. I'm not smart enough to understand most jazz.

Now that there is music....Krupa was the best, don't matter how old we get Barry, I expect to be listening even in the "home"...

Actually, technical ability is the first thing that brings me to a band. The tune or the words doesnt mean much to me at all. I like a showcase of ability with complex music.
Jon-Luc Ponti, Bela Fleck and Stanley Clarke put together a little band called Trio. They write their own stuff, and they write some of the most complex music i have heard. I saw them live a couple years ago and I loved it. Bela Fleck is boring as hell, Jon-Luc Ponti doesn't do much for me and I love Stanley Clarke. The 3 of them together is like a Mensa meeting of music.
Thats what I enjoy.

My favourites [aside from the ones who have already been named like Stewart Copeland, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Phil Collins etc]:
+ Louie Bellson - an amazing drummer and the first to pioneer a double-bass drum kit;
+ Al Bouchard - from Blue Oyster Cult, he has a great swing to his playing;
+ Jeff Porcaro - most famous with Toto and also played with Steely Dan, he died too young.
Stewart Copeland had an amazing drum setup when I saw The Police live this year. It was a multi-tiered kit with an array of percussion instruments on the top level [china gong, timpanis, etc] and a standard drum-kit on the ground. Once I have my website sorted, I'll post some of my photos

We just have very different ideas about what comprises good music. And that's okay.
I saw Return to Forever (Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Al di Meola, and Lenny White) around 1976 or so, and was treated to some of the best technical wizardry I've ever experienced. Intellectually I was blown away. But none of it moved my soul. And you certainly can't dance to it. To me, it's nothing like grabbing your gal and slow dancing to My Girl by the Temptations.

Bonzo. Definite heavy rocker.
During the early days when he first appeared, I mentioned Police's drummer to several friends, I thought it was noticeably very catchy drumming and liked it. Not much response back then with all the other big favorites. Good to see others here think highly of him.

Jon-Luc was kind of premiered a bit on Elton's Honky Chateau album. I gave him a listen elsewhere but couldn't establish an interest.
Stanley Clarke I saw a few times around '76 and had his first two early albums, but for jazz, I was hooked on Ron Carter, who I saw in a nice small setting a few times. Very light drumming. Trios though can really be neat.

Mick was a moody, spooky drummer when I saw him around '72. Hair down to his waist, over his face, and never looked up, hypnotic.
I don't know any new drummers but will toss in some old ones that I enjoyed. Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, and maybe Corky Laing. With Keith Moon and Carmine Appice, all seem to be power trio influence from the younger days. Ringo and Charlie were just perfect though.
