RIP     Posts: 2082 Memorial day is taboo? « on: May 24th, 2008, 11:21am » Quote Modify My daughter is in elementary school.  So far this year, they have learned about Valentines day, mother's day, groundhogs day, St Patrick's day and Cinco de Mayo.  They even spent the entire month of February (Black History Month) doing an in-depth study of Mexico.     But, there was no mention AT ALL about Memorial day.  Dianan didn't even know there was no school monday, let alone know the reason why.   WTF? Every day something out of the ordinary is going on, field days, field trips, band concerts, ect. The kids are pretty wiped out from excess testing and really aren't listening. I told one of my students on Friday I would see them Tuesday because they had no school Monday and they said "Why?" We did an incredible program for Veteran's Day. The program we did for Veteran's Day was so good. We had several speakers come in and talk with and answer questions from the kids. For the primaries the kids had to research the canidates and they all took roles from Obama's wife to Secret service to the canidates and had a mock election with the kids. By the way Obama and McCain won.   My father is a retired Army officer and a graduate of West Point. He did a flag ceremony with the Jr High School Lisa went with some other service men last Friday. This should be done more often with all of the kids. I guess growing up as an army brat on military posts, I've always understood and appreciated this holiday. We laughed about our father's war stories of WW11 and who's father "really" won the war single handed (I know mine did) and the time we spent together (I was an Army wife, but we were as much a part of it as the guys were).     Yes, this is a time we NEED to remember those to made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can live in freedom.
