Imitrex injection should only be administered where a clear diagnoisis of migraine or cluster headache has been established. The prescriber should be aware that clluster headache patients often possess one or more predictive risk fators for coronary artery disease.

___Anybody familiar with this warning or know about our predisposition to this?

Different opinion in different countries on that subject.Over here in Europe it seems that the neurologissts agrees that the 2 statdoze on the folder is for the migrainers and it also seems that they are starting to agree that the trex is NOT that bad for the heart as first expected
I had a heartattack back in 2001 and still shoot up to 5 statdoze a day,

This is something that you has to discuss with your neurollogisst i believe since there is no clear answer there

You've seen the imitrex tip on the left?  You can get about 3 shots from one injection and it works well.

The risk factors they refer to are:

1.)  Clusterheads are heavy smokers.
2.)  Clusterheads are heavy drinkers.
3.)  Clusterheads are heavy.

I object to this.
I actually had doctors acuse me of smoking and drinking.
I have never ever smoked.
Alcohol triggers my CH, so I avoid it. I love beer, and will risk one occasionally, but when a 6 pack lasts 8 months, I would not call that heavy drinking.
I also am not overweight. While I may not be the most fit person in the world, I am not overweight.
Never have figured out where that stereotype came from....

Attend a meet n greet or OUCH convention and you'll see.  Clusterheads, as a group, smoke and drink way more than the general population.  I fire up a ceegar once in a while and haven't had a drink in over 15 years but still get clusters.  There are exceptions to every rule.

I've always contended that the smoking and drinking don't cause the clusters but that the same defect that causes the clusters also causes us to have addictive personalities.

The national smoking average is around 25%.  The cluster survey on the right says 52% of clusterheads are smokers!

Darn!  People can break addictions to anything with the right therapy/program.  AA's 12 steps, drug rehabs, hypnosis to stop smoking (among thousands of others).  Why can we have a program to stop our cluster addiction?    I don't wanna be a CH addict anymore
Cry  Think there's a 12 step program for CH out there that we just haven't found yet (she asks, hopefully).

At the AHS conference this past June, Dr. Goadsby was running a Q&A session, and one of the members attending asked him a question that implied if someone wasn't a heavy smoker, then they couldn't have CH.  Dr. Goadsby went on to explain that his practice sees a number of small children (like Helen's Jabs) who obviously aren't heavy smokers or drinkers.  He described a number of cases of CH he sees and treats that involve people who don't fit this stereotype.

Later that day, I had the chance to finally shake his hand.  I thanked him for being our number one advocate and for being the one to stand up and defy the stereotype.  I told him I'm a cluster sufferer, and he asked a few questions about it, and then showed his own dismay about my being a primary chronic cluster sufferer.

I told him that I don't smoke, that I rarely drink (maybe twice a year - one glass of wine) and that I'm a young, thin female.  To that, he rolled his eyes and smiled.  Smiley  Great man!

Not long ago, my neurologist was starting me on some new meds and was telling me that drinking can cause certain effects with the meds.  I said to him, "Well I don't drink, so that shouldn't be a problem."  He looked at me and said, "Well....you're a cluster sufferer."  Didn't know what to make of that!  Does he think I really am an alcoholic and just lie well?  Never did figure that one out!

But nontheless, a CH'er and defying the stereotype every day.  I wish they didn't rely so "heavily" on the s tereotype, however, as I did notice from the convention and from experience that even some professionals seem to turn to it as part of diagnosing a CH'er.  Instead of needing the stereotype to diagnose, what they need to do is diagnose the person's CONDITION and then take note as to whether or not they match the stereotype - and not  the other way around!

If my Neuro had this preconcieved notion about smoking and drinking (I do not drink either, well maybe at this years convention I will a little) as they relate to CH, I would be concerned about his overall competence to treat CH.
I hope he is doing well for you otherwise. Huh

Rich,

Actually yeah he's very good - he's another world-reknowned headache doc.  Part of why I was a bit puzzled by what he said!  He's done quite a bit to stay on top of anything new and current coming out as well as doing his own part to help find new things.  He listens to his patients because I know sometimes he'll tell me what other cluster patients have tried and reported success with.  I don't just have CH, so I also see him for New Daily Persistent Headache, which is essentially chronic daily migraine.  I've had a migraine ever since 1/17/01 and have had CH since roughly 11/03.

My neuro and I haven't always gotten along, but in the past 6 months or so, things really turned around and have been much better.  Hopefully he doesn't think that I'm a secret drinker/smoker and just lie about it!  That wouldn't bode well for me...  I think he knows otherwise, however....may have just been one of those random ill-timed comments.   Tongue

I'd recommend him for people with CH and all headache types - he knows his stuff. Smiley

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

Also worth noting in the sterotype department:

Eye color %

brown + black 66%
blue + gray 18%
hazel 10%
green 6%

From the cluster survey

Blue/gray 33%
Hazel 19%

It appears there is also some validity to the blue/gray/hazel eyes part of the sterotype since clusterheads have these colors at almost twice the national average.
