Liquid Oxygen

Hello everyone,
I have recently trialed Liquid Oxygen or LOX for use with Chronic CH and its been hugely successful for me.

I've had it (LOX) for two weeks now and when it was first delivered I was shown how it all worked and made sure I could fill the portable unit myself etc. It really is idiot proof because I haven't had any problems!

This is definitely a good thing for people who are chronic and using a lot of Oxygen. I was under the impression that the dewar held 25,000 litres but I was told its actually closer to 40,000 - almost impossible to imagine how many cylinders you would need to have that lung power isn't it?!

The portable unit you get holds at least 90 minutes worth of o2 at 15lpm so thats a good few hit's and even more with a clustermasx as I've found.

The other really nice part to it is that sometimes I've found a "taint" to the O2 - like a smell or a taste sort of a thing, this is caused by the metal of the tanks apparently but because you fill the tank each time the O2 is fresher and it's always cool too because of the cooling for the LOX.

You will lose some through evaporation through the day so I've been told you do need to keep an eye on the gauge if you don't actually need to use it for a couple of days.

The "CompanionT" which is the type of cylinder I have weighs 3.9 KG full, its capacity is 1.25 litres of LOX which equates to 1058 litres of gas - thats like carrying two and a half E tanks everywhere!

I've taken some pics, if anyone would like any further info please ask! I'll help gladly.
Helen

Yes it is, that makes it nicer to breathe too as it's always cool! It's so incredible, I can't believe how simple, easy and convenient it is and its very discreet looking too for the fashion conscious amongst us  Wink

hi rhino
I have no idea how much it costs, its just issued to me by the O2 company here but I have this because its cheaper long term than ordinary o2 for the oxygen company to supply.

Helen,
I've read that the liquid o2 evaporates pretty quickly, especially in warm weather.  I'm interested in seeing how long you can go between refills of the big resevoir, let us know please.
Thanks,
Ben
BTW, did you know if you dip popsickle sticks in liquid o2 you can tie them into knots? Cheesy

Hi Ben, having not got hit since Monday night I can tell you that I'm refilling my tank today for the first time and it's about half full. Its been quite warm here this week, the lowest temp I've had here where I live was 78 degrees and its been lovely and hot again yesterday and today in the high 80's so I've lost about half a tank in five days. Not too bad I think

Rhino.. what is it with you boys today?! its all sex, sex, sex!  Roll Eyes I won't tell you what I do with my o2 because I'd only break your heart  Tongue

Wow, it looks like some progress is made for the treatment of clusterheads!

Up to now liquid oxygen systems were only suitable for respiratory diseases, where only low flow rates (2 l/min) are needed. At a higher flow, as needed for CH, the valve got covered with ice (from frozen air moisture) to an extent that the desired flow rate could not be reached.

So a word of warning for those that want to switch to liquid oxygen: Be sure to get a set-up with the same specification as LeLimey's and don't go for an older model with the ice problem.

Is the LOX something I could ask my Doc for? He does'nt really know much about CH but has always been willing to prescribe just about anything I ask for as long as I can show that I have done my research on what ever form of treatment I deceide to go with every cluster period.  What's the cost?

Hi Chris. Check your PMs...I just sent a hello.
Are you still uninsured? If so, a welders set up might be the cheaper way to go. PM me if you want...it's what I use. hugs, nani

Yup Brian I still use this. I have it delivered once every two weeks whether it needs changing or not as it does evaporate slightly. The only time I've ever run out I did have a second tank on standby as it was the week Matt and Carrie werehere and I had DavyP visiting too and everyone was on the O2!

It is always "Fresh" if that makes sense, the O2 never has that slight smell it can have from an older cylinder and its always cool as obviously it's kept in a refrigerated unit (the companiont I can carry around) The small tank comes with a shoulder strap and its the size of a 2L coke bottle as you can see from the pics. People seem to think its a posh vacuum flask as it doesn't look "medical" at all.

The only thing you HAVE to do with it is keep it upright at all times as if it falls onto it's side it makes a screaming noise and you do get "steam" from O2 hissing out of the bottom. I just put it inside a seat belt when in the car!

Hope that helps, I recommend it to all chronic's in an "Air Products" region here as they are the only O2 company currently investing in it but they have a high demand as once people try it they love it.

Awsome post Lelimey,

I should be getting it next week. Can't wait to give it a shot.  As far as cost goes, I was told by my supplier that the LOX usually costs between 200 and 400 a month, please remember that is in Canadian funds.  So it is at least double the cost of the normal o2. They also said I will need to be tested with it to ensure I can take it, I guess it's not for everyone!

Cheers
Chris
