I think this research is still in the infancy stages, but it's got a lot of very promising possibilities. They are doing knee surgeries using no pain killers but packing the joint with extracts of oleocapsium,,,(sp?)...the extract from peppers.

There is the infamous sinus buster which is oc you spray into your sinuses for CH relief. Haven't seen much promise there yet but again, it's still in infant stages as far as research goes. So while there haven't been any major break thru's yet I will not be suprised to see some potential treatments based on the compounds found in the chilis.

Guiseppi's 2 cents worth! ;)

Hi FK5,

Well wow, that website reminds of a favorite singer/songwriter, Tom Waits and his song "Step Right Up". Won't quote it, ya gotta listen to it. (wellll, here's a tease..."it'll win the election, give you an erection, it'll turn you into a nine year old Hindu boy" ).

My own personal experience as follows:

Tried capsaicin containing ointments on the temples. Gives a nice "burn" that I think was more of a distraction than anything else. One too many times of getting it in an eye and that was enough of that.

Next up, cayenne pepper snorted directly up the nose. Oh boy, that'll wake you up. I was actually believing it was working and carried a little bottle with, as well as little stashes at home and work. Some folks even thought I had "another" kind of problem because I was always snorting "something" and wiping my nose constantly.

Being dedicated to giving whatever I've decided to try a GOOD chance, I did this for months. Desperation will lead to odd choices... I finally stopped... it didn't work.

Now perhaps I am jaded in my choices. Currently have 30+ bottles of various hot sauces. I'm addicted and I don't care. My favs are the ubiquitous "Tabasco" and "Tapatio". Favorite named: "Scorned Woman...(cuz hell hath no fury like" ) and it IS deadly.

Regards,

Jon

Before I was diagnosed I too was trying ANYTHING that offered relief.  I think there was an article in "Prevention ?" Magazine (late 70's) about snorting cayenne pepper for headache relief.

That was interesting because my nose was usually plugged solid on the (right) cluster side.  Snorting through the left side definitely got your attention.  All said and done it wasn't much more than a distraction and very definitely an annoyance when the HA would start ramping up.

Hot sauce under the tongue didn't work for me either.  I found it very difficult to keep a teaspoon of it under my tongue for several minutes - it kept trying to creep around and eventually started burning the top of my tongue.

But what the heck - if you never try you'll never know.
If it would have worked I'd still be doing it today and I would put up with being uncomfortable if it helped abort or reduce a CH attack.

At the time I didn't have a resource like this board to turn to.  Hell I didn't even have a Dr. that had an idea about Cluster Headaches.  He gave me Tylenol 3 and after about 3 or 4 tabs taken 20 min apart it would knock me out.

Kinda like someones tag line (AussieBrian's ?)- 30 years suffering and still no dam good at it.

I had a neuro back in '94-95 tell me to put some Zostrix on a qtip and stick in up my nose.  Well, it didn't get rid of my ha, but if you ever really, really, need to drain your sinuses, just do that.   Once my mother-in-law told me burning raw cotton and snorting the smoke would work.  Y'all know how we'll try anything?  It was at that point in my married life that I knew she really hated me.

I have a craving for hot spicey foods once in awhile.  Off to the local Korean joint for the hottest dish available.  If I draw a sweat even better.  Somehow I think it helps.

Yup I'll get a takeout order of egg rolls and request an extra container of hot mustard sauce (that way I'll have some for later).
The hot mustard goes to work real fast and will definitely open up my sinus.

Or I'll pour a small dish of salsa and shake cayenne pepper and/or hot sauce on it and eat it with torilla chips.
It doesn't work quite as fast but it will still clear up sinus'.

Well now, I am a chilli freak, apart from the good old English breakfast and when I'm cooking for those who don't there's always one chilli at the very least kicking around somewhere. Just planted this years supply of habaneros in the yard, can't wait. Yum!

Newly diagnosed with CH on Tuesday after years of toughing it out so exprimenting with all the loads of advice and suggestions from this site. Strangely it's never occurred to me to eat anything while getting repeatedly kicked in the head. Just me perhaps! There's always two or three monstrously hot dishes knocking around in my freezer. Will be defrosting one right now in time for the next hit. Nearly a whole 24 hours since the last one! Hopefully I've turned the corner. Fairly permanent shadows though.

Not sure I can bring myself to snort it. Eeesh! No problem eating the corner shop's Indian greens raw though. Got loads of them and they give you a good old sweat.

I really don't expect much though, the idea of an enjoyable remedy seems just too good to be true. Fingers crossed.

Steve

I snorted cayenne pepper up my nose once also, and stood on my head to try and make it go up higher, lol it sure was an amusing sight from hubbys pov. ;;D  Not a good idea.  Burned liked fire and no relief.

I used red pepper up my nose (mixed with vasaline) on the cluster side and it actually did work for a number of headaches during one cycle, then stopped.   That was many moons ago, I've thought of trying it again.  Stuff's in the cabinet, it's free, and Imitrex is $100 a shot.  What the heck?
