Title: Imitrex Injection dosage/amounts
Post by eyes_afire on Jan 13th, 2005, 7:33pm
Shame on me for not paying attention to the finer details of imitrex injections.  I've been forced to rely on tablets.  I'm trying to compare cost-effectiveness of all dosage forms.

How many doses does an imitrex vial contain?  I think they are 0.5 mL vials?

Thanks in advance,

--- Steve

Oh yeah, and how bout the needles... need separate prescription?

vials contain one 6mg dose.  Take what ya need leave the rest.  needles, yes you need a script & they cost me around $20 for a box of 100.

Hiya Steve,

I still use the trex tip and have not been able for some reason to get the vials (insurance) yet ......

They appear to be the same "dosage" in the vials (based on reading), however, since you could regulate your dosage using the syringe I guess it will vary.

As far as cost..... This is info from Drugstore.com

Imitrex
0.5ML vial                                                5 vials  15 vials
6MG/0.5ML              $283.90  $823.30
solution

Imitrex STATdose
Refill Box                                               1 box      3 boxes
1 ea = 2 units              $116.84  $335.25

So if each vial is the equivalent 1 statdose syringe.....It is by far cheaper to get the vials.....

Crazy that 5 vials would cost $283.90 and 2 syringes cost $116.84

Either way still cheaper than pills.

Insurances are clueless paying more money for less product.

go figure.

and yes you would need a seperate perscription for the needles

I guess I have a cool pharmacist.  My doc prescribed the auto-injector which injects 6mg of solution.  I asked my pharmy if she would give me some vials and needles instead of the autos so I could take less then 6mg per dose.  She gave me the vials and the needles she donated to the cause for nutin.  Lots of the research I have read here on this site says that 2 or 3mg of solution provides the same result in almost the same time....and its 50% to 66% cheaper then taking a whole 6mg.  There is also less risk of rebound headaches....which as we all know can be a bit*h.
I am lucky I have good insurance.....but then again I pay almost $600 a month for my 3 person fam.....so it better be good.
GL and PF wishes.
BTW, I know we are talking about Imitrex, but you should get oxygen.  It really helps a lot.

Hiya Eyes.

.13-.15ml works for me about 90% of the time.  I get about 3 doses per vial, plus a little to spare.

If I need more I take another .075ml.
