Title: Prednazone for cluster headaches?
Post by L_Mac on Mar 6th, 2005, 10:08pm
I recently had a visit from a friend who suffers from CH about every four years which last  for a few weeks to a few months. She is emaciated! She says she is taking Imotrex and prednazone which upset her stomach and she can't eat. Is this common? Should she be losing so much weight? She is about 5' 5 and weighs about 85 pounds!! I am very afraid that she has more going on than just the headaches!

Please tell me if this is a symptom of this.

Prednisone is a transitional drug. It is used to temporarly stop the headaches until the preventative drugs 'kick in' and start working (or not). Usually people gain weight while on Prednisone. Prednisone should not be used too often and most of the time needs to be tapered off of. (Depending on the dosage and length of use)

I've never used it, but from what I've read here it seems to markedly increase appetite. Folks often complain that even their pets look tasty. Not sure if I've ever read that someone couldn't eat while taking it. I think it's bad stuff, too. My  [smiley=twocents.gif]

well, I lost weight at first on prednisone - about 13 pounds.
it seems possible that there is something else going on there - I'd suggest she go in and get checked out.

I've been doing pred tapers for years. Its a God send for me and the corporate bottom line at Papa Ginos.

How long has she been in cycle and how is she taking the prednisone?

Yes yes...I think we know I'm in agreement with this statement.

Especially since this May, they are cutting two incisions in the tops of both my knees and drilling holes through the ends of my femurs because prednisone killed the bone straight through the marrow.  Then my right knee will also have two arthroscopic holes to repair a torn meniscus from the joint sort of getting too much pressure from the dead bone.

All thanks to the Pred.

I would have to definitely say that I'm not a fan.  I'm 24 and looking at bilateral total knee replacements within the next 10 years most likely...and it could be also hibernating in my hips, shoulders, ankles, etc...

NOT fun.

But...we do what we have to do...

Like Lizzie I have bad experiences of Pred. Mine wasn't for CH though and it was long term so I don't believe it is relevant. Its well proven that it helps as a short term drug while waiting for others such as verapamil to kick in. As such it is used as a "preventative". Imitrex is an "abortive" and both have different uses. Preventatives work on cycles, abortives work on individual hits.
Going back to the Pred. It is a steroid and weight gain from day one is the norm. I put on huge amounts of weight in the first few weeks on it and my appetite.. well suffice to say not only did family pets look good, I'd have taken a bite out of Don!  [smiley=laugh.gif]
Nuff said!
To lose weight whilst taking Pred is cause for concern, definitely needs investigating by a doctor. Pred has some pretty strange side effects for some people. I was very delusional on it for one.
Get it looked into by her doc asap and please let us know how she is getting on!

I love pred!  It stops my cluster attacks dead in their tracks.  I only use the 6 day dose packs which give me a few days of decent sleep though.

Long term it blows me up like a baloon.
