Title: I don't believe it
Post by plazticsoul on Sep 27th, 2005, 9:16am
It took me a year and a half of this chronic pain to find out that mine is caused by a strange astigmitism that can be corrected with contact lenses.  :o 8)I wish they found this before I got checked for brain tumors and aneurysms and whatnot.  [smiley=laugh.gif] I'm getting fitted Friday, and I'll let everyone know if I am finally free.

Well I'll keep my fingers crossed but.. don't get your hopes up eh?? You've been diagnosed by a neuro right?

3 neuro's, all of them uncertain  [smiley=laugh.gif]

Funny thing is, the neuro's were my last stop on the journey. First came my GP, an optometrist, 2 ophthalmologists, a retinal specialist, and an ENT. The eye doctors all said my vision was fine and no damage to the optic nerve, but I was describing a crippling pain behind the eye that was driving me insane, so I was sent to the retinal dude so he could see behind the eye. Then he was like, that sounds like a cluster headache you're having, so then I started my neuro visits.  ::)  But, I decided to give it one more try and saw a new ophthalmologist last week and told him to look specifically for an astygmatism in my left eye, and he found it.   ;;D

It was like someone flipped a switch and suddenly I was without pain.  [smiley=huh.gif] Unfortunately I couldn't look through the lenses all day in his office so I'll have to wait for my contacts to see if it is the answer to my problem.

If you get rid of ch, fantastic. :)
I'm still sceptic, but let us know how it turns out, okay?

Good luck! :)

I have astigmatism too, since before CH. I have been unable to get fitted because our problem is that our eyeballs are not round, so the contact has a hard time sticking to the eye. I've tried several times over the years, and I get an awful burning sensation in the eyes. So.... I still wear glasses. Hope it works for ya!!

Like most others, I don't believe it will cure you. I found a dentist at one point in my search who "knew" that my pain came from my wisdom teeth. So he yanked them, and guess what? Lost the teeth but not the CH...

PF wishes. Keep us posted. And let me know how the lenses fit you. Hopefully you can tolerate them, and then pass on the name of your Dr. so I can go see him too! I hate glasses!

I wear contacts to correct astygmatism and it has no effect on my CH but I sincerely hope it takes away your pain and sufferring.

Ditto to the above.  Maybe this is the answer for you, but I've never heard of astigmatism causing a cluster-type pain.

We've all tried chasing down answers using the usual suspects.  May this be your answer.

Hugs,

Kris

I have the same problem, but I got contacts, Johnson & Johnson make a contact that is a little bit larger, with more of a curve. That way it covers the area and sticks better.. they are a little bit harder to change out, but they really stick to my eyeballs....

Just a thought.... But I still get the CH cycles, so my CH is not corrected by my contacts.....

Good Luck
God Bless
Charlie

HHMMMMMMMMMM,  I hope that its true.  However, it seems a little far fetched.  My eyes were one of the first things checked by my Doctors.

Good Vibes

But, I decided to give it one more try and saw a new ophthalmologist last week and told him to look specifically for an astygmatism in my left eye, and he found it.

Why would you tell him to look for it? Sounds real questionable to me. Good luck!

Well, my girlfriend has a bad astigmatism and she thought some of what I was describing, apart from the pain, was related to that.

I'm now wearing a single contact lense, in my left eye. The lady told me she wasn't sure if they had any trials that match my eye perfectly, but this one was "close to it". She's right. I did have an astigmatism and I feel like it's been corrected greatly, but it IS still a bit off. And by that, I mean my vision is a little "wobbly", or blurry. What's been happening is my left eye's vision has been so unable to keep up with the other one when focusing on moving objects. The brain would ignore the left eye's signal after a while. Now this lense is causing my brain to read signals from both eyes again, but it's still a little blurry in my left eye, and this causes the "wobbling" as I call it. So they still need to tweak it. Luckily, I'm going back this Friday.

Now, onto the cluster pains..... they have decreased, but are still there. I hope that the correct lense for me will cause these headaches to stop all-together, but I remain skeptical about it.

I didn't start having a problem with my vision until shortly after the cluster headaches began in April 2004, so I don't know if the vision problem caused the pain or if the pain caused the vision problem. It's unusual to 'get' an astigmatism all of a sudden. But it's there, and correcting the vision in one eye has seemed to improve my pains, at least if only a little bit.

I'll keep everyone updated  ::)

Me either! I have had it all...eye tests...ect I have always had better than 2020 vision (1520), and I still have C/H's. But, If for some reason the contacts help well then more power to you! Good Luck!

I went back to the doc and the only explanation they had for the toric lense only 'sometimes' working and the rest of the time things appear blurry is that it's not staying in the same exact place. So they are ordering more trials of different styles and brands to see if that makes a difference.

I have yet to decide if the astigmatism is causing the pain or if the pain is causing the astigmatism, but they both happened around the same time. I think it could be entirely possible that CH's are fucking with my vision, and it's as simple as that. But I will say that if I don't wear the contact lense and I start having a C/H, putting the lense in will bring me some relief.

I remain puzzled.  [smiley=huh.gif]

I'm sorry, PS... It's tough to have hope and then have it dashed to pieces. Since developing CH, I've noticed that my vision has gone to hell, but that could just be a normal result of aging and not related to CH at all. It's difficult to come to any sort of definitive conclusion. I'm hoping that you don't have CH, but if you do, I'm glad that you've found this place so that you can get and give support, and you'll have the right knowledge to wage an educated battle against the beast. Very best wishes to you.

-Frank
