Title: Neurotin/Gabapentin
Post by Jean2237 on Nov 8th, 2005, 3:08pm
Neurotin/Gabapentin--Last fall my husband's Cluster headaches began again after he had several years of not having them.
I did some research on the net and found that a drug that was being suggest was in the same drug family as Neurotin.
I had been prescribed Neurotin and was taking it for nerve damage in my legs after I had a staff infection following back surgery.
Since I had never had any side effect from it in the
2 years that I had been taking it, and being desperate  to stop my husband's pain of a cluster headache, I gave him one of my 100MG of Neurotin/Gabapentine capsule.
The pain began to let up and by bed time it was almost
gone. I gave him another 100MG and he got through the night with no pain. The headache tried to return the next day but I gave him a couple of capsules that day.
And the headaches when away. He took the Neurotin at bed time for about a week and that was it.
The headaches are gone and he is even able to drink a beer now.

Glad that worked out for the hubby.  I have heard of at least 1 person say they were getting positive results with neurontin.  With the exception of the loopyness, i heard it helped.

Hi Jean, Neurontin helped me for a long time. Then I'd have to increase the dose. Eventually I was taking 1800 mgs a day and barely getting any relief. I know one other person who was using it successfully, but she hasn't posted in a while, so I don't know if it still is.
Probably not the best CH med, but it helps some for a while. I'm guessing that your husband's episode would have been over whether he used it or not.
Look around here, for next time. There's lots of good info and support here.
pain free wishes to your home, nani

hey just found this one!!

my hubby was prescribed gabapentin/neurontin, before he started CH, for Fibromyalgia, built up the dose over a few weeks/months, then bam, CH started, took him off the med, and they did settle for a bit

coincidence?  any thoughts?

yeah i tried that route last year , it worked for a while started with 600 mg a day then 1200 mg then i was at 1800- 2000 mg a day it worked but not permanant , i lost most of my short term memory from it while i was taking it .
i took it for 4 months till it simply stopped working.
word of caution with this med you must slowly come off this drug if you use it it can cause nasty problems with long term use and a quick stop.

i've been taking it with lith/verapamil combo. When the combo stops working I ad neurontin to the mix which i've been on for about a year, works great for me, started out at 1200 mg. now taking 300 mg 2 times daily. makes you a little loopy and constipates the stomach a little. Good luck

Hello,

I tried GABApentin last year, worked for me also initially, but noticed that the dosages had to be made higher quite rapidly to keep te effect. I have nerve damage symptoms on the right side of the body and GABA revived the nerves little bit.  After two months and at about 1500 mg a day i felt that the med was also affecting my mental functions somehow nasty way. Memory loss, feeling not myself etc. Coming down from1500 mgs had to be done slowly as the withdrawal symptoms - huhhuhh, they were terrible! Had these "two second black outs" and panic attack feelings. Haven't touched the stuff since.
