I was on 480 mg Verapamil about four years ago when I first went chronic. Because of the cost and the side effects I quit taking it. About 6 weeks ago the CHs started getting real bad (4-8/day, 7-9kip). Went back to the Doc and was prescribed The Verapamil again. This time though, it is SR which isn't what I was on before. Are there any advantages/disadvantages to using the SR vs the 'regular' release formula?
I'm quickly running out of strength and want to try whatever gives me the best shot of calming these down a bit.

In the post on valproic acid (by nancyc) it says that prof. Goadsby, the UK specialist on clusters, advises to take the short acting (the normal) verapamil.
I had the normal variety too, and it did help.

I had my doc switch my verap to the regular kind.... seems to work alot better. Well so far anyway. Then if i feel i'm going to get hit i will jump on some o2.
But since i have started taking the normal verap i have noticed that my usual CH attacks during the day are pretty much gone. Its the one(s) in the evening that i use the o2 for.
again everyone reacts different... i havent had any side effects from any of the verap so far.

At the OUCH Survey page, there are two surveys underway re verap regular and SR. They are fairly new so not much data yet but you may be able to get a feel from looking at the results page of the surveys.
And if you've taken verap but haven't taken the survey, get your butts over there. This in something concrete that OUCH can do to help clusterheads. The surveys were put up there because this question comes up a lot.

There is a danger in switching from slow release to regular. Ueli doesn't know this but he saved me a lot of grief when he posted this warning several months ago. Thanks to him, I was scared enough to get information from my pharmacist and was told to wait a minimum of 12 hours before starting the regular stuff. I was feeling really bad...wicked heart palpitations, dizziness, felt like I was going to pass out. Please..if you are thinking of switching..read up on everything...educate yourself. You'll be happy you did!
