For a good number of years I have been going onto Sibelium and Inderal as a prophylaxis, once I start getting repeat migraine attacks. And it works well once the plasma levels are up. I have almost the opposite to the reported side-effect of depression: it improves my sense of well-being. I know Sibelium is serotonin-active and I am a little concerned about my use of the drug over the longer term. My questions are these:

1. How exactly does Sibelium act on the brain?
2. Are there any long-term effects such as those seen on the synapses of morphine users?
3. What is a safe dose to maintain for a long period of time?

It makes a difference, Richard, for the expertise we have on this message board regards clusterheadaches only. The mechanism for migraines is rather different from that of cluster attacks.

The pain is very different too, and I know for I have had both

I think you would do best to check out some migraine sites if it is migraines you are having. The people there are bound to know much more.

I am aware it makes a difference, but not to Sibelium. Do you have any knowledge about Sibelium?

Hi Richard,

flunarizin is a calcium channel blocker (CCB) that usually works for migraines but doesn't for CH. On the other hand, "our" CCB verapamil doesn't work for migraines...

Generally calcium is involved in some way in both the formation and transmission of pain, so fighting certain forms of pain (like CH and migraines) with CCBs makes sense.

Persons with a history of depressions should not take flunarizin but it's not said that it c a u s e s depressions. You also shouldn't take it if you suffer from any disorder of the so-called extrapyramidal nervous system (like the Parkinson's Desease, for example).
