Title: Got Old Photos?
Post by George_J on Jun 22nd, 2008 at 12:21am
Could be it's not of much interest to anyone but me, but the various photo threads had me wondering whether any of you have old photos you'd like to post.

Got to thinking about it because my brother sent me a bunch of old family photographs this evening--here are a couple:

This is my grandfather (second from the left) with his cronies, during Prohibition.  They used to manufacture their own bathtub gin, which was apparently remarkable for its horribleness, and its potency.  They pasted their own labels on it, calling it "Panther Piss".  I think there are still a couple of (mercifully empty) bottles of Panther Piss still kicking around.

This one shows my grandmother as a young girl, her brother, and their parents in front of their farmhouse.  Presumably the dog was living at the time of the photo.

This last one is a picture of the livery stable that my great-grandfather owned.  He's the disreputable-looking old rip (and looks were not deceiving) standing to the right of the dog.

Guess because I'm married to a historian who used to work as a photo archivist, I like to look at old photographs and speculate about the people in them.

Best wishes,

George

The first one reminded me of something from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I too like to imagine what their life was like. When my son Ryan was still at home he worked for a photo lab doing digital restorations. It amazed me what can be done to improve the clarity of these types of pictures. Thanks for sharing!

My Mother has pictures of her Great Great Grandfather and grandmother and also pictures of their families when they were little.  My mother in law also has really old family pictures as well.  They are very interesting to look at.  Lots of history there.

Jonny, that GTX is one sweet ride.  :o

All original--and 70k original miles?  What--it's been in suspended animation somewhere?

Best,

George

I like old pictures too, George.  Amazes me that during those early times of hard lives guys seemed to be always sitting around dressed in suits with a cocky confidence.    ;)    Even in suits at a livery stable!  :)

That photo of prohibition was awesome, I'll see if I can dig out the one of my grandfather...he was a rumrunner - lived in Canada and when the St. Clair river froze over they would drive the rum over to the states.

I'll see what I can dig up :)

George... I love old photos and I really appreciate those which you've posted. The thought of a moment of reflected light being captured in time has always fascinated me. Getting a small glimpse of people from the past stimulates so many levels of imagination.

Here is my tiny contribution to this thread... it is my mom and dads wedding photo taken in 1932.

Yeah G-Man, the thing sat in a garage for more than twenty years. Not one rip in the interior.

My buddy only brings it to local car shows, thats why it was out Saturday.

Thanks for these, I love old photos. I have boxes of them that I inherited (I'm the only one who really appreciates them). Now, if only someone were still around to tell me who most of them are, LOL. If I get a chance, I'll scan some.

My boyfriend in 1975 had a red one of those, Jonny. I remember puking out the side of it on the freeway one night. Never drank a screwdriver again.  ;)

heres one of my old f150 when i moved into my house about 5 years ago. it has a 390 bored .040 over with a huge open plane intake and a tiny 600 cfm holley. surprisingly it gets about 14mpg. when i had the big 850 double pumper it got half that and i couldn't keep tires on it. and yes i still drive it.

This is a pic of my fathers family taken in 1951 or 1952.  He was number 15 out of 16 kids and is standing to the left of my Grandmother in the pic.

Good grief Jonny.  You look exactly like your Dad...minus the tats of course.   eerie.

That looks like a 55 or 56 chevy in the background.

Charlie,

Love the pic of Jiggs!!!

Our local Bassett Hound is named Graham.  He weighs about 65 pounds and I think 20 pounds of his weight is in his ears.

He is a lovable pup but insists on giving me tons of kisses when I see him which results in need of a shower A.S.A.P. when I get home. ;D ;D

Not technically an "old" picture.  Just me and a couple of guys I went through the police academy with back in 1983.  That's me standing in the middle.

This is my great-great grandfather, Sanford.  Taken sometime in the 1880's, I think.  (He was born in 1840.)

I'm not sure what he was thinking with the beard.

Svenn, that's a wonderful album, with some great shots.  I particularly like the photo at the Arc de Triomphe, and the street scenes with icy roads.

Thanks for posting the link.

If I had known about this thread, I would have borrowed few pictures from our summer cottage and from mom's childhood home and scanned them. :)

We have nicely kept old photos and one thing I do each summer is to look at all of them. Naturally, back at mom's childhood home, part of the fun is to figure out which uncle or aunt is at the pic... ;D

I got approximately 250 photos from years 1920-1950 but most of them are just family trips :P I scanned only the most interesting ones some time ago and a few examples:

I just wanted to tell every one who has put up photos to this thread that they are just wonderful.

I have really enjoyed these pictures.  Is it me or does everyone look much smarter in the old photos than they do today?

;)

;D ;D  Most likely.  They didn't have the stupefying influence of television.  Bread and circuses, you know.

I've been scrounging around here, and came up with a couple of daguerotypes of extinct relatives--most likely from the first half of the 19th century--I'll try to post them tomorrow if I can figure out how to make them show up as digital images.  You have to hold them...just right...otherwise you can't really see them.

Daguerotypes aren't like photos.  I'd elaborate, but I'm not really the one to do so.  I'll see if I can get EJ to pontificate about them.  She knows a lot more about this stuff than I do.

Meantime, here's my favorite family photo of all time--not really an old one, but one that holds more meaning for me than anything else.  The two people in all the world who mean the most to me--on the happiest day of my life:

Okay.  Here's one of the daguereotypes that we have--it's an image of my great-grandfather as a young child.

Presumably, it was taken sometime during the American Civil War--my great-grandfather was born in 1861, and he looks to be about three or four in this picture.  Imagine getting a three-year-old to sit still long enough for a daguereotype.

Perhaps most poignant to me is the lock of infant hair enclosed, and tied with a bit of blue ribbon.

Sorry about the picture quality--I had to take it with a web cam.  Couldn't seem to get a good angle to take a digital photograph, and the scanner just didn't work at all.  Daguereotypes are like an image printed on a mirror.
