I've got a State Sales Tax Audit on two of my clients today (same family two stores). The nice auditor is coming up here to the farm to do the audit. I cleaned off the dinning room table (that was a chore in and of itself - it's the house "catch all").

Since I 'sorta" retired, I told him I just wasn't driving 100 miles for this thing and if he wanted to audit this client he could come to me, so he is. I'm really not too worried about it, but it's a pain in the rear and his timing sucks (I'm having company come in tomorrow and have things to do!).

I'm in "high cycle" right now with my HAs and really don't need this guy asking me what happened in 2004 when I can't remember what happened last week! But out of all my clients - if someone had to be audited - these are the ones I'd chose -- all the i's are dotted and t's are crossed with them. The actually LIKE to pay taxes and put everything down, so I can't think of anything we've missed over the years. They just do around a million dollars in volumn a month. But 4 years!!! The IRS don't go back that far!!!!

Oh well, maybe I won't get hit during this thing and if I do maybe I'll scare the hell out of the guy and he'll go away....

I went through a sales tax audit for 2002, 2003, and 2004.  I was able to provide every tiny bit of detail to prove my numbers were correct.  I even provided all of my daily cash register tapes, and every bill I paid (originals).

They decided that I had to be hiding revenue.  They said my profit margin was unacceptably low, and they RESTATED all of my sales according to their version of an 'acceptable' profit margin (average in the industry).  WHAT A LOAD OF SHIT.  They wanted (took, actually) $80,000 to cover the 'unpaid' taxes (and penalties for hiding my revenue).

I fought, and I fought hard.  It took almost a year, but they eventually returned all but $3000.  THEY ARE CROOKS.

I thought the exact same thing... all the i's dotted, t's crossed, no way in the world would they find an error, I AM SAFE.  But, that's not how it works if they are fishing for revenue.  Be prepared to fight, no matter what.  Never waiver.

So far -- nothing out of line that I can see.... (who knows). He seems more interested in the dozier and how we're clearing the place than the audit.

I fed him lunch and he said it reminded him of his grandmother's cooking (is that good? - hope he liked his grandmother's cooking :-? ).

Anyhow he's planning to come back tomorrow. Think chicken and dumplins tomorrow.  :)  Welllllll, they say the way to a man's heart is thru his stomach.... - hope it works.  So far he's only asked me one question and I figured out the answer to that and told him he was lucky to get it.... (it was the month after my husband died and I'm sure I made a few mistakes during that time).

Anyhow I'm sitting here twiddling my thumbs while he goes thru this big box of stuff. My head's at about a 4, but no hits so far....
