Title: To the Brits on the board... Post by JuniorBrew on Jul 3rd, 2008 at 2:43pm
I found some Marmite, along with some other English imports (spotted dick, Devonshire cream) at the world market in town.
My question is, where do you guys find the appeal of these things? In my opinion, Marmite is HORRIBLE, and I didn't have enough coinage for the Devonshire cream or spotted dick...any recommendations? |

Marmite is something you either love or hate, there does not seem to be an in between, I love the stuff as does all my family except my youngest you hates it, there is no accounting for taste.
It is great with cheese, with ham , brilliant with tomatoes and the very best just spread it over hot buttered toast and it is to die for The Devonshire cream I think is what we call clotted cream, which is a thick cream you do not have to wisk, take one scone spead with huge amounts of strawberry jam and then cover in the cream, serve with a nice cup of hot well brewed tea and you will understand the delights of it. What can I say about spotted dick, serve hot with lashings of hot custard and just enjoy the food of the gods. I tried grits once and am still recovering. |

I can fully understand your hating grits! I do too. I think you have to have been born in the southern part of our country to appreciate them.
Maybe we all have to be exposed to these foods as very young children or we won't like them. Ya think? :-? |

Grits are pretty plain - like Cream of Wheat, plain noodles, or potatoes. How can anyone hate them? If they are too boring, add butter, salt, or pepper. If still too plain, add hot sauce. Did you cook em with a little bacon fat?

Funny! Born-and-raised-in-Wisconsin JrBrew LOVES grits!
I stuck my little finger in the Marmite jar and had the tiniest of tastes . . . . . EW EW EW EW EW!!!!!! The World Market also sells CRUNCHIE BARS (Or Violet Crumbles if you're in OZ) so now we don't have to beg Grandma Sweet Boy to send them anymore! |

I LOVE grits. I admit that if you make them wrong, they can taste pretty nasty. They are best if you can cook them nice and slow on the stove for awhile so they get soft and gooey, but not so they get sticky. The best way to make them good (ironically, not gritty!) and not sticky in a hurry is to put them in warm water in the microwave for about twice the time the directions say too, with almost twice the water, so they are watery when they come out and then settle down into warm, creamy, non-sticky goodness. :-) It is all about enough heat and water and letting it settle!

I made it through my 3 university years in London without trying Marmite... But I did try Marmite crisps, which were part of charity fundraising. They were alright. ;)
