Title: Happened last night:Baby Seagull's Helpers (PICS!)
Post by sandie99 on Jul 4th, 2008 at 2:00pm
Last night Timo and I both were wondering why we can see so many seagulls from our living room window. It is normal to see one flying by every now and then - after all we live near a lake - but this time we could see five or six with just one look.

Timo went to the balcony, trying to figure out what was going on. He thought that our neighbours are having a barbeque or trash can nearby has fallen down or something like that. But as we stood at our balcony, we coundn't smell a barbeque anywhere.

But, instead, I saw two tiny and grey creatures walking at the sidewalk next to our building. Baby seagulls.

We realized now why the seagulls were so restless and constantly screaming. They were trying to help twose two littleones and were helpless in their attempt to rescue them. We saw several seagulls on the top of the building on the other side of the road. They were on the watch.

We decided to help the baby seagulls streight away, if we only could. Timo run outside first and I followed him as fast as I could. While we were on our way out, they baby seagulls - who could have wandered right to the busy street - were now at our neighbours' garden. Timo's arrival had altered their path to the garden.

We went to the garden right after them and knocked the neighbours' doors. A man appeared and Timo told him why were had arrived and if he could help us help the baby seagulls.

The man found a box for us - we could try if the baby seagulls would trust us enough to get inside the box and we could then carry them to safety, far away from the busy streets and cars, which could drive over them in a heartbeat.

Luckily, the baby seagulls, as aftraid as they were, trusted us enough to step into the simple brown box. Timo and I took turns in carrying the light baby seagulls and wondered, where would be the safest place to leave them. Lake store, absolutely, but what spot? Finally we found a peaceful, safe place and put the box into the ground. The baby seagulls stepped out of the box quickly and run to the water fast.

As I watched the tiny seagulls swim further and further away from us, I almost cried out of joy. They seemed so happy! It was, without a doubt, one of the most incredible moments in my life.

When we walked back home, one seagull flew near us and it stopped to a lamp post in front of us. It let out a quiet sound before it flew away. I think it was a thank you.

P.S. Those seagulls in the picture are not the ones we helped last night, but they look identical. Timo did take few pictures and it they will turn out ok, I'll post them in this thread.

I think it was a thank you, too. What a great experience, Sanna. I think that it's quite possible that, as those babies grow up, they'll remember you and Timo.  :)

Seagull Pulp Fiction

VINCENT: Soooo, where are we swimming to now?

JULES: I guess the next town over, we just got escorted out for having our parents teach us to scarf up a half-eaten McDonalds burger from the street.

VINCENT: Maybe they have a Finnish Hesburger in the next town.

JULES: "That'd be cool, and their fries don't come with salt on them."

VINCENT: ...you know what they call a Quarter Pounder with Cheese in Paris?

JULES: They don't call it a Quarter Pounder with Cheese?

VINCENT: No, they got the metric system there, they wouldn't know what the f*ck a Quarter Pounder is.

JULES: What'd they call it?

VINCENT: Royale with Cheese.

JULES: Royale with Cheese. What'd they call a Big Mac?

VINCENT: Big Mac's a Big Mac, but they call it Le Big Mac.

JULES: What do they call a Whopper?

VINCENT: I dunno, I didn't go into a Burger King. But you know what they put on french fries in Holland instead of ketchup?

JULES: What?

VINCENT: Mayonnaise.

JULES: *damn!

VINCENT: I seen 'em do it. And I don't mean a little bit on the side of the plate, they f*ckin' drown 'em in it.

JULES: Hamburgers. The cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast.

VINCENT:  I heard there's a place that serves five dollar shakes.

JULES:  Fat chance we'll see any of that.

LOL!  Kevin, I would LOVE to get inside your head, Mister! What a fertile imagination!
...personally, I think it was a GOOD  thing your mom dropped you on your head when she brought you home from the hospital :D

Sanna, Gil and I have done this with wayward baby ducks....Imagine them, walking in a row, single file, down a freeway!!! What a wonderful, touching moment, when you saved those baby seagulls!

AHH, the wonderfulness..........

Cathi ;)

While seagull parents are perfectly capable of defending their fumbling youngsters from cats and such, they can't help much when it comes to traffic.  I think you and Timo did a good thing, Sanna.  Great story.   :)

Last spring, we noticed a frantic duck in our front yard.  Upon investigating, we discovered that her ducklings had marched single-file right into the storm drain, and they were stuck down there.

Ellen helped me fish them out with a butterfly net.

We weren't thanked.  The mother cursed us horribly until every last duckling was out.   ;)

Best,

George

Thank you all for your lovely stories about encounters with birds. It was heartwarming to read them. :)

Charlie,
I must admit that when I first saw those guardian seagulls on the roof, I did think about Birds.

Andrew,
I can honestly say that "seagull pie" was the furtherst thing on my mind! Those baby seagulls were so adorable and helpless, so my only instinct was to protect them from the traffic.

Kevin,
that was funny - again! ;D Thank you.

Nani,
it would be wonderful if those seagulls would recall us one day! :)

Sanna
