This event has been held at Timo's home town, Sonkajärvi, since 1992. Timo and his friends have been there, watching it, for several times. Few years' back when Timo's friend got married, participating at Wife Carrying World Championships was part of his batchelor party! This year Timo's best friend is in charge of the timing of the competition.

Timo asked me to add these pictures. He took them back in 2003, when his friends Toni and Ville participated. Toni carried his then fiance (they are now married and this race was part of Toni's batchelor party) and Ville carried his other friend's little sister. :)

Well, George, when you look at the pictures from this year's competition, the contestants are almost dragging their wives... It looks uncomfortable indeed!

This year, again, the winners came from Estonia.

And Jonny, I believe that the secret to success in this competition is to carry quite light partner - you need to be fast to win! I don't think they will give extra points, but they do give a time penalty, if you will fall and drop your partner.

Our local news actually did a small story on this event I think last year. Pretty funny stuff.

I read that this event made it to the news internationally. Back in here, it's always at the end of the news broadcast as it's light and entertaining. This year, it was said that Wife Carrying World Championships is important, because it's an event in which "sports meets entertainment". :)

have you seen how the "wives" are carried there days? Looks very uncomfortable to me!

Note to self: when Timo's friends are arranging plans during early July, do not go along... ;)
