Title: I hate firing people.........
Post by jimmers on Jul 16th, 2008 at 9:32pm
But I have to July 25th.

I honestly like the guy, good worker albeit a Drama queen but he just doesn't listen to the more experienced people on my crew or me, and it has cost my department money.

I have tried to tell him (Straightforward), but he just doesn't seem to get it. I have been as assertive as I can regarding the way I want things done, but he will still put his own little spin or technique on things, which adds man hours to the job. Even though I and his co-workers have trained him in our way of doing things, he still will not adhere to our tried and proven techniques. Six months of this BS is enough!

It's always, "My last employer trained me to do it this way". To which I retorted after I was pissed "Does your last employer sign your checks?" Then I got the proverbial Deer in the headlights look, with the "Whatta you mean?"

I have never been good at firing people. Even though I may put forth a different persona. I will try to help people along as much as I can and have compassion and be as Christian as I can about my decisions regarding these situations. I hate the thought of people thinking I'm a "Prick", but they forget that I take orders to and I'm sure I'll have another enemy for life. Oh Well :-/

You don't fire most people, they fire themselves. It sounds like what you have......a guy that's fired himself.

jonny,

Sometimes its amazing to me the number of people who "JUST DON'T GET IT"

Your right, when I had my own business it wasn't a problem telling people to take the train, or hit the skids!
I think I'm a victim of my own circumstance. I try to be friendly with everyone, and they construe that "I'm the bosses friend"

Could be my own fault for being compassionate or nice :-/

Oh well, maybe I should re-think my coaching ways. Because after all, most bosses are coaches, and nothing more. I have to keep reminding myself that its nothing personal, its business.

While it makes it harder to do, compassion is never anything to apologize for. You have done all you can. Firing is never an easy task but sometimes necesary, but it will never be enjoyable. (well unless he is a prick)

I hated firing people back when i was in management.  I even hated firing people I didnt like.

And I dont understand why people think you are paying them to do it their way.  What the hell did they think the training was for?

Firing is not easy, but when you're the boss, it's just a part of the job...

I've given people every chance in the book, but when the chances run out, I've never had a problem with "Sorry, you're out of here. good luck with your next endeavour." My "bottom line" always came "first".

One woman actually "sued" me for causing her to have a heart attack "for demanding that she do work that caused it" (in an OFFICE!). It was thrown out but was a pain in the butt. Imagine "demaning" that she make copies and answer the phone, etc... And that heavy typing on the computer was just outrageous!!!! Not to mention putting those heavy files in the filing cabinets... What a slave driver I was...

Sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do.... Take a deep breath - it'll pass....

Hugs BD

Jimmers, try to think of the upside to it.  Firing him may just be the best thing that ever happens to him.

Seriously.

The fact that you hate to fire people speaks to the kind of person you are.  (kind, caring and compassionate) It won't be easy to do but you've put great thought into this decision and you've given this guy a ton of breaks.

Now you have to do the job you're paid to do - cut the deadwood from the team.   You've done all you could have to protect the man and his job and at some point it's fish or cut bait.

Makes me glad that I'm retired now and no longer have to deal with work place crap!

Good Luck!
Carol

Need a replacement for him?

It sucks to have to be the guy to lower the boom..... hopefully he will not harbor any ill feelings towards you.

I was thinking the very same thing.  Really!

Some people only learn the hard way.  You are teaching him the consequences of not following directions.   No one is ever held accountable for their actions anymore!   Hopefully he will take this experience along with him and try to do better at his next job.  Yes, I know that some say that jobs are hard to find.  I really believe that if one wants to work,  one will find work.

If he learns from this, in the long run, you are helping him.

Just my 2 cents,

Jeannie
