Title: Just call me Gramma! Post by Sandy_C on Jul 17th, 2008 at 1:06pm
Well, daughter # 2, Christine, who wasn't due until 7/27, had to go in Sunday afternoon for induction. Chris was borderline preeclampsisa (toxemia) and they had been monitoring her every couple of days. Her blood pressure shot up to 185/95, she had a lot of protein in her urine, and her body almost literally ballooned, swelling in feet, legs, hands, arm, and ever her face.
Her water broke late Sunday afternoon, she called her doctor who said "get thee to the hospital NOW!". Tarey and I hit the road immediately, got to the hospital around 7:00 pm. Chris had been given pitocen (sp) to start contractions, and labor was going slow, but well when we arrived, but she was not dialated much - only 2 centimeters. Ok, so we now wait. They increase the pitocin and contractions increase in frequency and duration. She dilates to 5 centimeters. They increase the pitocen again - she dilates to 6 centimeters. Now, she is feeling the pain of the contractions which are coming every four to five minutes, so the give her the epidural. Epidural is in, pitocen is increased again, contractions are coming like gangbusters. But we're still at 6 cm dilation. This is around 11:30 PM. All grandparents, Tarey and I, plus Jason's parents, move down to the hospital lobby waiting area trying to find somewhere to sack out. We all thought it would be just a couple of hours until it's push time. Well, all four of us tried to catch some sleep on some itsy bitsy little couches, about 4-1/2' long, made out of concrete (?) with a 1" thick cushion. Plus, the danged AC in the hospital had to have been set at no more than 50°. We're all wearing shorts, short sleeved shirts, sandals - we froze our a**es off. From 11:30 until around 3:00 AM, we are trying to catch a wink, while checking in on the progress. We learn that the pitocen has caused rapid contractions, so quick and long that the baby cannot get enough time to get oxygen, and the baby's heartbeat slows. So, now, they back down the pitocen, Mommy (Chris) between lower pitocen and the epidural goes to sleep. So do the grandparents, on the itsy bitsy couches in freezing temps. At 5 ish, we learn that Chris is still dilated to 6cm, so Tarey and I go to our hotel room, grab a hot shower and nap. At 7:00 AM Jason calls and says thing are moving again, come on back. We get back to the hospital at 8:00 and have to sit out in the waiting room again because Chris is pushing. Maegan was born at 10:13 AM on Monday morning. Mom is doing well, although BP is still high. Baby, who is the cutest little thing, is doing great. All four grandparents are coming down with colds after almost 20 hours sitting in freezing conditions, but our granddaughter is gorgeous. She is 7 lb 13 oz, and 19" long with a head of dark hairr just like her daddy's / Pictures will be forthcoming! I knew Dalcon was scheduled for this week, but I KNEW that if I went to Dalcon, something would happen. I've learned to trust my gut instincts. I wish I had been there, loved the pics, but I was where I needed to be. Love to all.... From, Gramma (2nd time) Sandy |

Congratulations!! I don't know why hospitals have to be so cold. My son was born in Aug. during a 100 degree record week. He was swadled in so many blankies. I still remember how freezing it was and that was 25 years ago!
Of course you know, we are patiently waiting for pictures!!! Charlotte |
