That is one of the problems with allowing any one to breed.

I am glad to see that at least the name was blocked. I have been teaching for 28 years and you would never beleive some of the names I have taught, although these in the article were much worse. Latrina and Maryjuanna were two of the girls. Dick was another, no big deal but last name was Harder. Poor kids....Are these race horses, puppies are humans???

Exactly my feeling.  Names like this may be slightly amusing (to someone or other) but behind them is a human being who has to be burdened with the thing.  At some point in their lives, they can certainly change their names, but why commit a dastardly deed like this in the first place?

Question is--is this something that other people should "do something" about?  I'm a little hesitant to define it as "abuse", which in my opinion should be reserved for acts that are clearly malevolent, dangerous, or actively harmful.  It's clearly stupid, and clearly ought to be discouraged, but there are other ways to squelch stupid behavior than through the legal system.

Names are complex things, and can channel future behavior and development of the person named.  Naming a child is a serious act, and ought to be taken seriously.  It's not just a convenient handle for a cute critter, it's a reflection of our hopes and dreams for a future adult.

And there you have my curmudgeonly opinion, FWIW.

Best,

George

In Germany there is a big list of approved names and one must pick a name for the new child from that book!  In a way this is good as one cannot name a child Aldolf Hitler Schwartz.

My, how totalitarian.

Sandra, has there anyone ever been who wanted to name his kid Adolf Hitler Schwartz, or is it just an example?
Schwartz sounds a bit Jewish, so that would be ironic, wouldn't it? But yes, it is a very good thing you cannot call your kid Adolf Hitler. Jeez who would ever wanna do that? The lord has some very strange renters, so to speak.

A cousin from one of my best friends named his daughter Metallica, after a Californian heavy metal band. Strange indeed, but calling your daughter something like LaTrina?????

What ever happened to "normal" names like Joe, Jack and Bill? At least you can spell those and PRONOUNCE them.....

I've been doing income taxes for years and have to ASK parents if their dependents are MALE or FEMALE? Some of the names are ridiculous... and UNPRONOUNCABLE... what these kids must have to endure when they start to school is unreal to me. Learning to spell their names has to be reason to graduate... :)

Maybe this should be child abuse -- or maybe it should just be grounds for sterilization in the parents -- they should NOT be allowed to reproduce again...

My daughters name is Krishara. Her name is Celtic for Winter Star.  She loves it but there are people who have a real hard time with it until they see it.

A gal I worked with in Vegas was from SC.  Her dauther's name is Cameabrequa.  I think, I might have missed some letters.  The girls teacher call LaWanda (the mom) the first day of 2nd grade and asked her if she knew that her daughter could not spell her own name...

It is crazy...

Wow!. You obviously don't have gun shows over there.  People like me mostly sell war relics from every period at the things. I've met several lunatics at every show that name their kids and dogs after Nazi heroes. Now there's a form of child abuse from where I sit.

I believe a worse infraction than idiotic naming is allowing the government yet more control of and interference in our lives. Part of the joy of freedom is that individuals get to bask in their own decisions (good and bad) and certainly the naming of one's child be encompassed therein. We can all agree 'Tallula does the hula' is an undue burden on that poor kid but to repair this should there be a new Governmental Name Reviewing Office? Funded by additional taxation, oppression, and the inherent corruption of all governmental agencies?

Maybe a picture of those parents in a section of the newspaper with the names of the children underneath them would be impetus and warning enough to future namers with pathetically poor taste. Unlikely they read the paper though, eh?

I agree that its a RETARDED name, I think its even MORE retarded that the judge turned his critical disliking of the name into a law that says parents no longer have the freedom to name their kids what they want, if someone else hates it.

God help us....We need it!  :o

One by one freedoms are being stripped away....and yet, we say nothing!  >:(

I wonder why the name Jesus is so popular.

That just seems weird.  Imagine naming your kid Jesus.  Just for shits and giggles, his middle name has to be Harold.

I shudder to think how many Obamas are going to be running around this time next year!
