Seeing as none of us are likely to have Pete with us when we're getting hit bad and needing medical attention, someone had mentioned the need for medic alert tags.

I found this website and from what I can tell, the tags and bracelets are fairly inexpensive.

Thanks I have been looking to replace my current one since my address on it is no longer current.  I have lots of allergies to meds.  The worst one is iodine.  They use that for MRI scans, and to clean you up before surgery.  I swell up when it is put on and can't breath if it is injected.  Despite having a braclet that states my allergies and being concious to tell a nurse my allergy to iodine I have still had them come at me with it 2 seconds after I had just told them my allergies.  It is so routine.  I have a great fear of this being repeated if I am uncouncious and brought in needing surgery.  God help us all if that happens.

Seeing that you cant get all your medical info on a little braclet, think about having it all tattooed on your chest. If the doc goes against it you will win the law suit!  ;)

This is a great idea, Jen.  I haven't had to be carted to the emergency room for a CH for a long time, but you can be sure that I'll get a bracelet, at least, and will wear it when I'm in cycle.

Yes, there is a yearly membership fee, but for that, you get a whole lot.  I've been going with them for years now.  Previously, I went with companies that allowed you to put your info on a bracelet, but whatever you put was all they'd know.  With Medic Alert, you go in online or via phone and update all allergies, conditions, medications, and emergency contacts, and then between Medic Alert and you, you decide what you want the bracelet to say.  Personally I have way too many things going on to just have them take my bracelet at face value.  My current bracelet says "Multiple Medical Conitions, Multi Allergies, On Medication" and has my Medic Alert ID# an the phone number for Medic Alert.  All a health care provider has to do is call the Medic Alert #, verify that they are a health care provider, give them your ID, and they receive a print out of all the info you've put into the database about your health.

One of my older bracelets says something about my anaphylaxis to benadryl and to call medic alert.  The newest bracelet I will be getting will say something about my implanted stimulator and multi allergies, and to call medic alert.

Medic Alert also has something called an E-Health Key which allows you to cooridnate and store all kinds of info on a USB that can be used in any type of computer by health care provider.  I have one, but am not currently using it.

Personally, I like Medic Alert based on the companies where you just get an engraved bracelet, but that's because I have pretty complicated health issues.  They do have ways to help with the cost so that nobody goes without a bracelet that needs one.  I got a pretty cool beaded bracelet for cheap...about $25.  But they have some pretty fancy jewelry for those who would be interested.  They'll also send you a card with your major health info on it for your wallet.

If anyone wants to know more about my personal experience with Medic Alert, I'd be happy to share.  I really like them.  For awhile I'd let my membership kinda die off, but then when I got my stim I just renewed it and wear my bracelet every day now.  I have fatal allergies to a couple of meds, so I really have to have the bracelet on me at all times.

One thing further about alert jewelry and surgery.  They TAKE IT OFF when you go in the OR because it is metal.  They have to remove all jewelry.  So that's the only time when you'd be better off with one of Jonny's tattoos!  haha  But hopefully they would look at your bracelet as they were prying it off your arm and read what was inscribed. ;)

We have 1 for Shaun because he is diabetic. Never thought about getting one for me.   Will have to think about that.

While not exactly related......I keep a card that I made with a list of my meds (with dosages) and allergies, etc. info with me. I printed out a list, cut it out and clear taped it with clear packing tape on an old business card. It lasts that way. My doctors and medical types love this because they don't have to decipher my babble. It might be good for CH info.
