You all may have been wondering about the annual "Davcon" thread, which is usually started after the convention is over.

Since there is now no smoking in the atrium of the Steeplegate hotel, in Davenport, Iowa, and there is no smoking in any public area of any hotel in Illinois, after talking to Woobs, I wanted to ask if any Wiconsin CH'ers may have a suggestion for a hotel in Wisconsin that would accommodate our "needs" (smoking in a public area of the hotel).

The atrium of the Steeplegate was perfect, and a great place to hang out, as anyone who has been there knows. It will be sadly missed.

If anyone in Wisconsin has any ideas, or suggestions, please post them here. It would be best if the city it was in was near an airport, as some people will be flying in. I don't know about the smoking laws there, so we need your help.

Of course, we could rent a few vans down by the Mississippi river, but we'd probably be lacking a few creature comforts that we are all used to. ;)

So, let's here it from you folks from Wisconsin! Any ideas?

I'll check into the Ramada here in Point.  There is a shuttle from CWA airport if I remember correctly.  (switching ownership may have changes that but a contract may be in place by January)

I suggested a few months back that we look at Lake Geneva. Not sure how pricey The Abbey resort is or whether they allow smoking in public places.

Our vote would be for St. Louis!!

The Mid-West Recumbent Bike Rally is at Stevens Pt. on the 9th and 10th of Aug Redd. I was sort of hoping to make it up there for it, and a visit. But I can't find a way to schedule it this year dammit.
There will be several Catrike riders up there. I was looking forward to riding with them. Instead of the high end bicycles that I'm usually riding with. And Chris would get a chance to go do a bit of shopping with you.

Davenport Iowa.  Not a "convention" per say, but it's been an annual winter meet and greet.  (Ive yet to be able to make it to one)

Do it during fat tuesday!!! Surely New Orleans can use a little tourist money!

As much as I want to see the French Quarter...I think the whole idea of the "Mid-West" meet and greet  would get lost.

But hey...warm weather in winter is a welcome idea to this "frozen tundra" native.

Just for the record, it's perfectly fine with us to have it at the same place - Best Western Steeplegate - and just go outside for a smoke. It's what we do anyhow.

what ever yall decide to do send a a pm. i'm starting a new job in a few weeks and i'll have more freedom.

Starting tomorrow I am personally going to a few local close by hotels/motels big name & small locally owned to check into a place where we can gather and have a conference room all to ourselfs so we can smoke and talk and drink and eat. Will keep everyone posted weekly if not daily or every other day.  Terry (who would just die if the DavCons were never to happen again and wishes my house was bigger & cause I dont like to travel)

I should have some numbers and venues for Indianapolis by the end of the week....

I found a place that sells studded tires for my Trike. So I don't care where its held this year. Just make up my mind.

       Here's a thought,  Quit smoking and it wont be a problem, I gave it up 25 years ago and I still wonder why I ever smoked in the first place.  Its a vile habbit and personally, I will avoid being around smokers at any cost!
       Need oxygen for clusters and still smoking seems to be cundundrum to me!        Smoke Free John

I checked there and many other places I have not found one yet. I was thinking Indiana as well.

How 'bout Madisonville, KY?

    LOL  Madisonville? The only problem is our airport will only handle Piper Cubs. Don't want to keep those who might fly in away if possible. Of course, you could smoke all you want in this state lol.
    There was some talk of bringing it a little farther south at the convention and St Louis and Indianapolis were mentioned as having main hubs airports. Beth was gonna check out some hotels in and around St Louis and someone else was gonna check Indianpolis. Both would make it a little bit more mid country.

I did some calling around and many of the hotels in St. Louis have adopted a no smoking policy.  I spoke to the Drury Inn and they do have a floor of smoking rooms, but no smoking in the hotel lobby or bar.  The onsite resataurant bar does allow smoking.  The rates were reasonable, $99.00 for king and $109.00 for two doubles, plus lots of freebies.

January weather in St. Louis is unpredictable.......you never know.  We have had the odd warm days, but mostly it is around 35-40 outside.

Has anyone heard anything about other locations?

Okay, call me sentimental but I would hate to see Davcon moved.  I would also hate not being able to go to Sneaky Pete's for a yummy steak dinner.

Here in Delaware we have not been able to smoke inside public places for over 10 years and you really do get used to it.  It's also nice going home after being out for the evening and not smelling like an ashtray.

My vote is to keep Davcon at the Steeplegate forever!!!

Personally, I don't mind stepping out for a smoke, but can you imagine between 30 to 50 CH'ers all standing outside smoking at once? That would be a site to behold, especially in freezing weather, or below zero like last year.

And Guiseppi, my friend, I saw you when you came in from the cold in that light jacket with a t-shirt underneath. You were COLD! If you come this year, PLEASE invest in some long underwear, and a coat. Otherwise, the place will need a fireplace, and we'll need to thaw you out in front of it.  ;)

One of those big, overstuffed down coats that make you look like the Michelin man.

Oh I will make Davcon again, wouldn't miss it for the world. I hadn't ever seen a thermometer go that far BELOW  zero...thas messed up.....big time. The coats will be far more substantial next year!!! ;D

That's exactly what happens at the conventions.

And Guiseppi....I warned you last year in plenty of time to buy a coat for cripes sake, even if you only use it once a year for Davcon.  Californians are such weather wimps.    ;D

If everything is going smoke free like it looks like than I say lets have it in Davenport at the Steeplegate.  They have been so accomodating so far.  And we have a history there.  Lets just get a block of rooms reserved and be done with it all.
