Title: Oh Boy
Post by Mat on Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:36pm
Due to the Brac process our plant is being privatized and the controlling entity and the current operating contractor have conspired to take over our business. I have been fed information from within the contracting company of this conspiracy. We have filed suit in Fed court to try to stop the  process and for breach of contract. Well the documents that I was given will be used in court and the defendants lawyers will be deposing me as to where and from whom I was given these documents. It appears I either produce these peoples names or face contempt charges. So I either have the choice of ruining several peoples careers and retirements or spend some time behind bars.   Choices.........

Your job (and possible jail time, not to mention the criminal history that will follow you) vs. their jobs?

Not much of a choice if you ask me.

I gave my word that they wouldn't be involved. A man is only as good as his word. Sometimes I amaze myself with my own stupidity. I can't believe I put myself into this predicament. Since the operating contractor is DOD and subject to the Army's security protocol....well its gotten very complicated very quickly.

But if they broke the law by giving them to you, why should you pay the price?

Wow.  Sounds like a lawyer field day.

Were you told you would be in contempt by a judge?  If a lawyer threatened it, I wouldn't worry about it.  Unless you are ordered by a judge to give the names, you can not be held in contempt.

And you certainly cant be held in contempt at a deposition    ;D

Please, PLEASE tell me none of these docs had a DOD classified stamp on them! Write zeros to your drive yesterday. Then low level format that sucker and write zeros to it again. Then ghost the system and data from another machine onto it. Dummy up NOW.

I didn't say that, you didn't hear it from me, I wasn't here, no one saw me do it, I'm innocent. And thats not my IP thats being logged.

I personally would take the cover off the drive, spin it up and hold a bulk tape eraser or large neodymium magnet as close as possible to the spinning platters.

The drive must be spinning when you do this and it will completely desectorize the sucker far beyond recovery. Then put the cover back on it and through it in the old parts drawer so they can’t find it in the trash and get suspicious.

My wife works for waste management and the cops setup special pickups where they watch the garbage collector till they get “the” bag so to speak to preserve the chain of custody.

You will also need to destroy the other drives in the machine if you deleted something “important to your privacy” because the recycler will write recovery files to all the drives in the system volume information folder (a hidden file) and you can’t delete this file without a bootable NT disk.
